Title: Boss Hm-2
Post by: SnooP_Wiggles on November 25, 2003, 10:43:47 PM
I recently fixed up a boss hm-2 with some dead caps, but I still suspect something is faulty judging by the sound (sounds more like a fuzz than a metal sound). Can someone tell me if this is the right sound for a boss hm-2?

save this link to have a listen (dont just click the link as that doesnt work)

I bought one several years ago and it's been apart almost as long, but from what I remember of the sound, that's not it. I remember it having a LOT more high end and metalic crunch. Where were the tone controls set for your sample?

I'll see if I can find it and patch it back together for a sound sample.

it can sound like that with the right eqing.. but no it shouldn't.. the definative sound for this pedal..(i cut my teeth on this pedal and have modded and built quite a few of these.).   for a good cranked up metal sound. you need the following.

(note the following setting are in reference to a clock face. with 12 being the middle of rotation)

gain: max
low:  1:30-2:00
high: 3:30-4:00
vol:  12:45

that will give you a nice old metal before everyone used mesaboogies. there is a mod to give it more gain. but it also changes the characteristics of the pedal.

check the resistor value with a dmm coming off the first opamp if you have the schematic its the one going to the drive knob.

also if you put a trimmer in the feedback loop of opamp IC1A then you can get some recovery gain before it hits the eq.

this will help give you more saturation. of course you can also lower the 47k i was speaking about earlier heres some other usefull mods

Thanks for that but I'm still not convinced that this is the right sound. This time I followed your settings and used a clean amp model on my Digitech Rp100 rather than direct into the sound card. It sounded close to what i get from my Fender frontman amp (couldn't connect it up to comp). I'm using a  fender squire by the way.

Im also getting some volume oscilations, not sure from what. have a listen.

I had a look at the schematic and its a little different to my pedal, has
m5218L opamps instead, and only 3 not 5. Oh and the resister you mentioned is 47k.

Maybe check the clipping diodes.
