Title: Whipped up a '70 Fuzz PCB....
Post by: Bucksears on November 29, 2003, 06:23:32 PM
and I'd like someone to check it out. Would anyone be willing to QA this PCB for errors? I'm not sure on the pinout of the transistors, but that part would be easy to correct. I just want to make sure I haven't overlooked anything.
Let me know who wants to give it a go!!

id love to look at it...did you do a drawing or a real pcb?

It's a real PCB. I have been doing them in Adobe Illustrator for a while now. I made the grid size so 1square = 1hole on a perf board, then made standard (grouped) pads for a resistor, a small cap, a transistor socket, etc.
That way, it's just a matter of arranging them. I'll usually work from a previous PCB when making up a new one, then save it under the new name; that way I get to 'steal' the pads and rename the parts!!  8)
I can send it as a JPG if you'd like. It was done so it will print out ACTUAL SIZE.

Oh, I just need e-mail addresses to send them to.

Sorry, when I meant a real PCB, I mean it's not a hand-drawing or anything. It's a ready-to-print image with a parts layout beside it.

have you messed with the eagle layout program? i am trying to figure it out as we speak. JPEG would be great! Thanks man..

I got it.  Thanks.

I'm checking it over as I type this.  I'll go over it a few times, but so far so good.  I hope to build one real soon.

Thanks again.

I guess my main concerns are the transistors (since I haven't fully checked the pinout) and the trimmer. If anyone finds any errors, let me know and I'll change the layout accordingly.
Thanks,

OK. I checked the pinout at NTE for the C828 equivalent (NTE199) and the pinout is E C B, left to right, face up. I'll change the PCB either tonight or tomorrow with this update.

Craig and B,
Check your e-mail again. I went ahead and updated the corrections for the transistor pinout and sent you the updated jpg.
Thanks,

it looks right to me...i guess with the other layout you could use standard pinout trannies. exellent work bucksears. very intelligent layout.

Dave,
Check your mail. As I've mentioned above, I'm pretty sure the layout is right, but I could be overlooking something.
Thanks,
Buck

I'd love to see it as well.

You will probably want to use a NTE289A instead. It has the same pinout as the 199. I've found in most, not all, FF the 199 on the input side picks up radio stations. I use to use a combination of the 2 in my Beer Buzz. I still do fhrom time to time, but when the tone isn't getting it for me. I'll try any combo of things to get it. The 289A's wont do the radio thing and have the same pinout.

Built and tested.

Sounds EXCELLENT.  Very warm FF sound.  The PCB was really well done, probably the best I've ever etched and drilled.  Very good spacing.

Did anyone who's tried it have slight pot wiring problems?  I wired everything with the 1 and 3 lugs backwards, so I redid everything the correct way, and the mid and vol pots were still backward.  It's probably just me... I tend to screw simple things up.

Thanks for the PCB.  It was an easy build.

ps.  I used BC108B's.
