can i use a 2n3904 instead of a 2n5089  in the following schematic??? thanks

Well, you could, just so long as you had the pinout correct.  They might have a bit of a different sound, but they ARE both NPN.

The pinout is the same, but the 2N5089 has a higher current gain (Hfe) and is low-noise.

I'm pretty sure a 2N3904 will work here. You can replace it with a 2N5089 later. Small Bear (http://www.smallbearelec.com) has them.
