Yeh, what would i use for that? I have my single coil base (magnets, pole pieces, plastic base) from my IBZ Middle pickup that i destroyed (on accident, i swear...) and want to rewind the coil. What would a good gauge be to use?
#42 is the most common, but the whole range of #36 to #52 has been used successfully. #52 was used by Rickenbacher, but it's VERY hard to handle because it's so tiny.
I'd start off with #42. You can get reasonable quantities from Stew-Mac:

The type of insulation varies, too. I wouldn't be real particular about it until I had some experience in winding.
there is a lot to learn an pu making in the pu makers forum at www.firebottle.com. go to ampage and chose the forum there.

personally i like winding it with fat wire and utiliizing a preamp.
Who knows what those guys are up to with that.
Seems like you should be able to figure a way to get string to wind if you were me, but Ppl are warning that it's tricky...tension it just right and scooch it over as you go?...lol, it does make me want to try it with this old pickup made in part from wood, reportedly from a Silvertone.
You can always pot them in wax if they oscillate from loose windings. T
Andrew thetonegod has a good article about winding PU's here.
Check out the other articles too!
