Title: Diode switching in a Muff Fuzz.
Post by: bobbletrox on January 03, 2004, 07:08:44 AM
I was thinkin' of wiring up two DPDT toggle switches that would allow me to switch between any combination of germanium or silicon diodes in a Muff Fuzz -but will it screw up my circuit?  Will switching different combinations even make a difference to the tone?

I'm using 1N34A's for the germaniums, but what would I use for the two silicon diodes?

Thanks.

this is quite a fine idea and would work just fine with 1N4148's as the silicons, but i think you'd be wasting a bit of time wiring up two seperate switches. my suggestion would be to socket the diodes, and simply swap them around in all the different combinations to find your favourite setting.

there really is only 3 different options. if you like all three you can use your original idea with 2 switches. but if you like only 2 arrangements, you'll only need one switch. and you may find that it doesnt make a lot of difference to your ears, and you just want to leave it in one configuration. Easy! no switches required!

hope this helps,

trent

Cool idea.  I have sockets and actually there are many different combinations.  You can mix GE, SI and LED's, plus you can use Jfet's, Mosfets or GE transistors.  There are dozens of combos.  The hard part is deciding which one you like most.

I currently have an LED/SI or LED/Jfet combo going.  Get a MPF102 Jfet at radio shack or use 2.  Put an SI/GE in series and use with an LED.

Find Gus' MF mod #1, or just add a 1 meg resistor across the diodes.  That helps a lot.  Might want to switch that.  Good Luck

Thanks for the ideas guys.  I'll have to check that resistor mod out too...

I'm really interested in making component combinations swtichable from the top of the enclosure.  You don't really see that option much on pedals.

I was just thinkin' about this, and it would be possible to wire two mini 3PDT toggle switches to simply flick the base, collector and emitter between silicon and ge transistors.  Imagine teaming this up with the diode switches!  You could have an all Ge Muff Fuzz, an all Silicon Muff Fuzz or any hybrid in between at the flick of a few switches.  It funny because all this switching business has come from me just adding a fuzz boost switch by wiring R2 up to a DPDT that switches between a 10k and 47k resistor.  Now I've gone switch crazy.

I'll have to build a monster Muff Fuzz with all 5 swiching mods when I get some spare cash -it'd look like a porcupine.  Jaycar in Australia has some great mini 3PDT (http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ST0505&CATID=&keywords=3pdt&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=xxxxxxxxxx&Keyword2=xxxxxxxxxx&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=) and DPDT (http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ST0356&CATID=&keywords=DPDT&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=xxxxxxxxxx&Keyword2=xxxxxxxxxx&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=) toggle switches that would be perfect for this.  Then I'd just need to find a darn pair of NPN Ge Transistors.
