Title: What fuzz i must build?
Post by: Danny_CKone on January 04, 2004, 09:48:07 AM
Hi guys! im new in this forum, seems a great place :)

Well, im thinking about build a fuzz (i dont have one in my pedalboard9 but i dont know what fuzz could be good for me.

The only thing i know is that it have to be heavy, i play hardcore and metalcore (thing Shai hulud or Snapcase) and i use my amp as main distortion, but i want something diferent for certain parts; i though about a Fuzz Factory (I know the guy of Deftones use one) but i supose its almost imposible to find the schematic.

What fuzz i must try? could be good it have octave option? maybe the fender blender? Thanx!
Title: What Kinda Amp Are you Using?

There was discussion about FF into Tube amp Vs Fuzz Face into Solid state...I tried FF>SS amp and I'll just say unusableu Raw sounding like GAkkhh.
If you amp has built in distortion, [or not] you might do well to just boost the input.
For crunchiest sounds I use a Tonebender, or Sonic Distortion [that's the first time I've seen those two in a sentence]

I've built several FuzzFaces, yet. Both Si and Ge and I never found that they are heavy in a heavy-metal meaning.
Compared to the FF simulation of my GT-3 which sounds really dark (which is the only commertial FF I've ever played). So I would advice you to build a BigMuff or for instance a distortion.

Try Ansil's DS-386. It's similar to the Boss DS-1 but with the amplification stage & FET switching taken out, then he replaced the gain stage with a simple LM386 amplifier IC. I like the Boss DS-1, I used to have one, but I traded it for a metalzone. I think I'll build the DS-386 though :) It's not dark as such but it has some nice crisp crunchy sounds that can crank your amp up nicely.

Personally I prefer playing through a clean amp and a pedalboard for any alterations to my sound. It feels better to me :)

My amp is a Engl Screamer head; 50w all tube amp; it have lot of gain, and when i need a "over the top" gain i use a T.C booster (wich add lot of signal and a punch). My heavy, crunch and clean tones come from the head.

I wanted the fuzz for different not metal sound as i said, fuzzy, nasty, strange sounds (dont need to be supersatured, but not light 70' rock); i will use it for certain textures mixed with echoes or modulation effects; or for lighter parts..i dont know if im explain it clearly...my english is poor. Thats why i said maybe the Fender Blender, cause the the footswitchable octave mode.

One question more...the Fuzz Factory have a similar desing to a fuzz Face?
Someone know how sound the Guyatone Harmonic Distortion 2 (i think it have something in common with the Big Muff, but im not sure)

Thanx again

I just built a sili face from runoffgroove, and it actually seems to sound a little better than my modded Dunlop reissue (with Germaniums).

Hi.  I agree that FFs can get quite heavy when turned up.  But for more, there's Joe's Blackfire (V1, can't comment on V2) - very heavy.  Also, the Odie at runoffgroove has a solid, tough sound when turned up.  Or severely overload a CD4049, as in Mark Hammer and other's tube-sound fuzz.  But for heavy cruch you'll also need some mid-scooped tone control.  So maybe the Muff Pi with a modded tone control section...

Have fun.

For an over-the-top crazy fuzz sound, try the Jordan Bosstone-it's a very simple circuit and it provides some killer palm muted chug-chug-chug sound.  Aron's Hornet and Rocket are good for these purposes as well.  If you are doing Metal, high gain Si transistor-based unit are typically the norm.   To get more versatility in these circuits (ie-more tone control, uneven clipping, etc...) read the Simple Mods/Tricks section on this site.  I would say my favorite pedal for metal is the Sin Amp GT-2 on Tonepad, though it's not really a fuzz, but a killer distortion modeler.  Not a good build if you are a beginner, though.
