As the author points out a 555 timer can be used as a LFO. Square wave output, though.
BTW, I had pretty good luck with the Vibrato on this page. Still tweaking it on the breadboard, though.

The biggest problem with the 555 is that it kicks up noise in to the power supply. If you want to design something with that timer use another version of it (i.e. 7555). If you have one then theres not much you can do with it for audio purposes.
