Title: Volume Pedal...
Post by: blabj on January 13, 2004, 01:41:24 PM
I need help on a volume pedal idea of mine. basically what i was thinking is instead of using an ordinary pot, using an LDR instead. I was just wondering if this would be possible, and if so how?. I have a vague idea of how it might work, but I'm not 100%. I would also like to have a min. volume pot. ok my schem wont show up on here... i dont know why so you will have to email me @ blabj"hotmail.com (replace " with an @ symbol). please tell me because i am very eager to get to work on it and i am hoping that it will all go smoothly
thanx

Why would you want to use and LDR? Use andertons volume pot de-scratcher if you're worried about scratchy volume. :) It's possible I guess... It'd be a bit of a pain though I think .

Mail me the schematic at smoguzbenjamin@hotmail.com :)
Do you have a free website? You could post pics etc on that!

edit: even 13-year-olds can come up with good ideas, so don't worry ;)

The LDR would just replace/be in parallel with one of the resistors which sets the gain in an amplifier.  Its resistance would be controlled by a LED.

For example, in an inverting op-amp the gain could be set for just above unity and the LDR placed in series with the input resistor.  With the LED at full brightness the LDR is at minimum resistance (unity gain), but as the LED dims the LDR's resistance will increase and the signal is attenuated.

If you used the treadle of a wah pedal to increase the brightness of the LED as you pushed down on it, then you’d get an increase in volume.

Loads of ways to do this, the above was just one example (and probably not the best - just wanted to illustrate how easy it is).  Have a look at ‘the technology of the Wah pedal’ over at GEOFEX to get an idea of how to control the LED with a foot pedal.

Thans for that Morley link Casey... there is  a rather ingenious wrinkle there!
George Dennis are big on LDR footpedals too.

thanx again
