Just got done building the TS from GGG. I get slight distortion but it stays the same anywhere within the pot travel. I pulled the pot and checked the value and that was fine. I also have the pot wired to have lugs 2 and 3 shorted. I checked all the resistor values before soldering and re-wetted all the joints. The tone seems to work well, switch seems to be fine. I also get unity gain at full throttle on the level pot. I'm using 1N34A's for diodes cuz that's what I had laying around. Any ideas why I get no increase in distortion from the drive pot??
I had a million problms for ever till i got mine working. I tried this too and realized that-from what i remember- there really wasnt all that much distortion w the germs unless you add more in each direction- some say add a 2n4001 and i seemed to get less distortion when i was supposed to get more..hmmm..what about leds? have any of those? I thought those sounded good w this circuit. Diff ideas at the forums mods and ect..I still bet it is the 1n34a's.
Deep subt.
It sounds like you should look for a problem relating to or around the gain pot function.
My gain pot turns all the way on AFAIKT at about 1/3 the way up.
It doesn't heavy distort. try some different low clipping threshold diode configurations in it,,,you should hear a difference between that and with no diodes in it ...disregard without socket there.

hmm i know how to solve it, but it involves building a much easier circuit while using tube screamer freq responses
Hey guys,
I finally got around to swapping out the 1N34A's for 1n914's. All I can say is WOW!! What a difference!! It went from completely dead to sweet, sweet creamy goodness. It sounds way better than my modded TS-9. Then I started trying the op amp mods talked about a few weeks ago and it got even better. Why would the diode change make such a difference??
Why the difference? Consider that the Ge diodes start to provide feedback at about 0.2V, while the Si diodes give some feedback from about 0.7V. So your signal is very "squashed" with Ge diodes (tho I think they do sound good in Dist+ and other circuits). My TS9 clone sounds very sweet with two 1N4148s (in series) antiparallel with a single 1N4148. Even more "open" than standard, and some extra, tasty, harmonics due to the uneven clipping. (this is the same diode setup as in the much-praised Boss SD-1)
Hi,
i own an old Hohner GuitarCombo. The Organ channel can be driven with a Humbucker guitar to a Marshall like Crunch - sounds realy crunchy!!
I tried to build my Tubescreamer like this sound. And came very close to it by using 2 1N914 Diodes in Feedbackloop and adding one 1N4004 in series with one of the 1N914 Diodes.
And i changed the 1K Resistor from Pin6 to Pin7 at the OPAmp by a 3K3 Resistor. You can go till 10K (but try out at high settings, to prevent to much noise)
The Sound is crystall brite with a long sustain.
Works well to drive your TubeAmp into saturation for a Rocking LeadSound.
Rock ON!
