Title: Cabinet simulator (preview)
Post by: Elektrojänis on January 23, 2004, 03:58:55 AM
This is something I have been tinkerin on my breadboard: http://www.hut.fi/~pjunno/temp/cabsim.pdf

Any thoughts?

Some things might look a bit strange, lik not too many coupling caps between stages etc. but it works quite nicely (to my ears anyway). The tone stack should decouple any DC between stages 1 and 2. Stage 3 (a buffer) is using the DC from stage 2 as bias (if I understood correctly, as I said it sems to work ok).

Petri,

Looks good - should sound nice.  I built a circuit almost exactly like that once  except I had a -18db/octave jfet filter at the end...  I used it in my studio for a long time with good results.

regards, Jack

Nice to know I'm going in right direction. :)

Anyway here are some sound samples from the unit on my breadboard:

http://www.hut.fi/~pjunno/temp/cabsim/cabsim_only.mp3 (Guitar to cabsim)

http://www.hut.fi/~pjunno/temp/cabsim/scrambler_and_cabsim.mp3 (Guitar to my scrambler clone to cabsim)

http://www.hut.fi/~pjunno/temp/cabsim/sos_and_cabsim.mp3 (Guitar to modified Son of screamer to cabsim)

http://www.hut.fi/~pjunno/temp/cabsim/electra_and_cabsim.mp3 (Guitar to one of my weird muddy versions of electra distortion to cabsim)

Tone controls of the cabsim where set to somewhere and the switch labeled bright/dark was set to bright... Actually there is no switch at the moment... I just plugged the capacitor in there. :)

Actually now it sounds a bit too harsh (with the distorted sounds) to my ears when I'm listening to those samples... I'might try lowering the cutoff a bit. It was on the bright mode... I could try limitting that treble boost a bit with a resistor.

Bumping this up... Sorry if somebody gets annoyed.

The new version: http://www.hut.fi/~pjunno/temp/cabsim/cabsim.pdf

I'll try to record some samples of this version in a few days.

My playing is crappy but maybe those give some idea of the sound.

Go ahead... I'm trying to make a PCB-layout too, but it might take a week or two.

I should probably test it with some other dist boxes.

Janis, this cabsim looks good, it's on my build list too  :D
