Title: Transistors
Post by: Hungeryhippie on January 23, 2004, 09:56:09 AM
Hello all a question on transistors cos I just found some.

1. For the Brian May booster it use's BC182L, I found BC183L's can I use these I looked at its spec sheet and they looked pretty similar.

2. Does any body recognise these following transistors? And circuits to suit them?
BC184B
AF102
AF118
AF178
BC138
MA8003
NKT214
NKT222
NKT227
BFY51
GET882
Thanks in advance

Hello Hello--
The 183 seems to have a higher hfe then the 182.......can you measure the gain of your trannys??     The info that I have says the 183 can have gains as high as 800  [ ?? ] but the 182 only goes up to the 400's.  I'd stick to a lower gain for the May TB.  There might be noise problems with a different tranny, too.   [Treble boosters at BEST are noisey, so anything to cut down the racket is good!
Brian.

the hfe's from my DMM say that the BC183's are 369-459 over a range of 5 transistors. Are they too much? Are they suitable for any thing?

Hello Hello--
I like 182, 183, and  184  for  single tranny boosters and Fuzz Face type circuits.
Hey, why don't you put a socket in your May treble booster and try different ones ??
[I just remembered that the 184L is great for the Colorsound Overdrive....a GREAT overdrive pedal!]
Try the 183 and see what it sounds like....it could work real well for you!
I've got some 182's  if you want to work out a swap.
Brian.

I'd never even looked at the colour sound overdriver looks good so far, thank you once again

The BFY52 was very popular at one time. It's NPN - I can't remember the hFE.

Do a search on Google "BFY52 data sheet" You'll get a ton of results. The net has about every trannie data sheet you could wish for.

Simple circuits like the "fuzz-face" are probably best - You might need to use a pot instead of a bias resistor to get the biasing right though (I speak from experience:-))

Hello Hello--
Sounds great!   Let me know if you have any other trannys for trade.
If I find out any info about the other trannys on your list I'll let you know.
Brian.
