Hey,
Ive designed a nice booster pedal, and want to put a gentle clipping section to ground on the end. Has anyone got any ways to get soft, compressed Overdrive from shunting diodes 2 grd?
Ge's or LED's [er whatever you're tastes become] Mosfet's or other transistors B/E diodes work...sometimes.
Back to back
I would go for low threshold on pairs of seriesed Ge's, some configurations may not clip because the voltage may not reach their threshold
apply the diodes between the second lug and ground if you pedals booster knob is the out put knob.
What GE diodes have you found to be nice sounding?
personally i would try the schotky diodes. but put a trim pot before them. yields and interesting sound.

try a couple mosfets.. as diodes.

I'd try several ge diodes in series in both directions for some extra headroom before clipping. Maybe 2 on the other direction and 3 in the other... or 3 and 4. A (smallish) resistor in series with the diodes should soften things up too.
About the only clipping i ever got that was 'subtle' is in the TS types.
For subtle I use 2 Boosters, and recommend 1 [or more] of them be Mosfet or Jfet.
For the lower end of severity OD's and Dists, I havent' found anything more subtle than a Booster er two of em seriesed....course I'm pushin' em into tubes...I guess it depends alot on the amp.
These Mosfet driving Jfet designs get nice smoothy OD tones.
I like putting them right after the output cap. A nice touch is to also add a switch so you can have clipping, or no clipping. I like having the two going one way and three the other approach as well.
