Title: Fuzz Face: How does high leakage affect the sound?
Post by: jjs on January 25, 2004, 09:17:25 AM
Hi everyone,

I'm new in building effects and wonder in what way a high leakage (i measure 400 to 800 mA with my AC125 transistors) affects the sound?
Without the leakage I got a gain quite close to 90 on all AC125 I have, so the only problem seems to be the high leakage (it has an unpleasant buzz or hiss and no warmth at all).

When unhappy with Fuzz Face sounds, the first thing to check is the voltage at the collector of Q2.

How does that look?

..The second thing
Then get some known good ones so you can compare with...Build a few and you start getting the Idea...stick an Si in there just to see what that does...{NPN/PNP[?]>Don't forget to swap & re-Bias}...oh cap values change it too Read GEOFEX^

Thanks for the replies!

I have already measured the voltage at Q2s collector. It's about 8V (i read that it should be about 4,5V). Maybe it would be a good idea to use trimpots, but i am not sure where to place them in the circuit.

Try some of the Links.
A visit Runoff Groove will show you where/how to wire the trims on FF's and TB's {And Much More] GEO gets inside the FF...theres FF's info all over the place around here...Check some of the links etc.
