Title: forum suggestion
Post by: sfr on January 26, 2004, 08:11:32 AM
I don't know where best to post this, just a quick note :

It'd be cool to be able to search under keywords and author - like, if I remember Mark Hammer posted something cool about LFO's, or I want to find a thread I posted in asking about transformer questions or something, being able to search under both fields at the same time can cut down search time significantly.  I'm sure this involves some work and I don't know if the code for the forum is maintained by the moderators or open source or what, but I just thought I'd mention the suggestion, not to be a jerk or anything - again, kudos on all the great work guys, this place is lovely.

Yeah there are some issue regarding the searches.  I don't search the archives much but have noted some difficulties there when I have.  Can't remember them at the moment.

A weird one is you can't find things like Q2 - the search doesn't find anything.   It's something to do with the alpha + numeric combination.

i just try to remember who is the ones who talk more about certain things and search by their screen names..  for instacen if there is a bbd type thread you can probally guess mark hammer is on it. so why not just find a recent post of his click on his name and find all posts..  only certain people here would take all day to find there posts..

It's too bad, but phpBB's search function leaves much to be desired. I wouldn't be surprised if it was written by somebody who is using a different brand of SQL, and we're seeing how the port to mySQL runs which isn't 100%.

I know Aron will upgrade the software at some point and hopefully that will make things work better.

It's not all that hard to expand the search and I could hack something, but I just don't have time these days. If anybody wants to do some php coding...... ;)

For background info..... The forums takes a catalog of each word in your post and indexes them in a table. When you search for "negistor", the table is able to reference all the posts containing that word by using only that table. It works well provided that the words are broken up like conversational English; being technical, we're not so lucky here :(. If we "fixed" the search now, it would still have all the old word data to work from. I'm sure it could be made more useful though. The funniy thing about this approach is that the search word table is MUCH larger than the actual message base it came from.

Thanks for the comments. Keep thinking about this problem and what works and what doesn't work. We might want some adaptation specially for here. :)

Take care,
-Peter

 Thanks Ben, but I didn't make any of this board. All I did was write some converters to import the old data.

The credit goes to the phpBB team lead by Paul Owen. My hat is off to the whole team. 8) 8) 8)

This is a really cool program. If anybody wants to play with it, you can download it by clicking on the phpBB link in the copyright line at the bottom of each page. You need to run it under PHP and an SQL server, but there are packages (free ones) that install Apache, PHP, mySQL, and phpMyAdmin (for DB administration) in one easy operation. When Aron switched over, he, Andrew the Tone God, and myself all installed it on our home machines without issue. I'm on a PC using Win2K, Aron was on a Macintosh Powerbook using OS X, and Andrew runs FreeBSD (I think... or was it Linux?). I would encourage anybody who is interested to install it and look around. :)

Take care,
-Peter

Hey, I'm in the list :) :) :) :). I'm happy :) :) :) :). I have a suggestion too. I know that there is a list of online members in the forum, but sometimes this don't work right (I saw that I wasn't online sometimes :P). Why not to put a online indicator above the posts number in the members' info? And what about a "people who is chatting", like in the old forum?

The board sometimes doesn't register you yourself marcos, if you refresh the page you'll see that your name is there after all ;)
