Title: Kester 63/37 "405" solder
Post by: ErikMiller on January 28, 2004, 02:10:36 AM
I finally received my 1lb. spool of the new Kester solder and soldered up a few boards to see how it works.

My initial findings:

As far as wetting goes, it's still not as active as "44," but it wets better than any other no-clean flux I've tried. I was kind of disappointed that it wasn't as active as "44," but I guess there's a reason the stuff has been as popular for as long as it has.

As far as the fumes go, they've got a winner there. Much less visible smoke than I've ever seen from a flux core solder, and what few whiffs of it I got were not nasty/irritating in the slightest. Based on this alone, I don't want to use anything else until they come out with something better.

The only place I could find it for under $20 a pound (and a pound is the minimum) was Contact East. If enough people wanted to try it, Small Bear could probably put together a decent price on it. If you're interested let him know.
