Title: LPB-turned-fuzz
Post by: zener on January 28, 2004, 07:36:13 AM
Can anyone point me to a sound clip of the LPB? I would like to compare because I built one and it sounds more a fuzz/distortion than a booster. I breaboarded a similar circuit to the LPB, Electro Harmonix Screaming Bird, from  http://fuzzcentral.tripod.com and it sounds more of a booster.

Still, I like my LPB-turned-fuzz. I just want to know how other's LPB sound like.

Thanks.

No sound clip, but LPB I built only distorts if you're really pounding on the strings. Sounds like yours has an "issue"?

Mine distorts too, is like a overdrive. I think this is because of the pickups, I use humbuckers.

Oh, I haven't thought of that. I always use two humbuckers on my ax. My LPB uses a 2n5088.

Yeah it will definitely get a bit grungey if you throw a lot of signal at it...

use a trimmer on the emitters resistor, increase resistance for cleaner boost, with slightly less output

The lpb-1 will clip when you send too much signal to it. The transistor just saturates. To give it more clean boost ability or what is called "headroom" you could build a 18 V lpb-1.
a good tech article on the lpb-1 analysis is found on Justin Philpott site called Effectronics.

I have an LPB-1 in my guitar body and one in my mini-mixer which I use to plug a CD player in  If the LPB is on, the output level is humucker-loudness and the second LPB distorts. Try using a 100k trimpot to decrease the input level. Alternatively, try a resistor with a higher saturation threshold.

Hehehe, now I understand. You use two humbuckers and a high gain transistor. Then you are like me :P. A suggestion, use the LPB like I use, to give lots of gain to a high gain distortion.

Well you could try a 2n2222 they seem warmer and less distortiony. I don't know about the threshold though, might be just as bad.

i use a 5k pot on the emiiter resistor for my saturation control. and  i use a 2n5089.
