Title: 1/2, 1/4 resistors
Post by: Axmanjr on January 28, 2004, 03:21:57 PM
What kind of difference does 1/2 and 1/4 watt resistors have on effects?  I accidently bought a variety pack of 1/4 watt resistors for my next project!  I normally used 1/2 watts but was wondering if there would be any type of tone difference (signal loss...).  Would I be able to use both 1/2 and 1/4 watt resistors on the same board?

Thanks

No difference really. Yes, you can mix and match. Obviously the 1/2 watt resistors take more space.

Sometimes a 1/4W resistor will fry like in amps but usually in guitar circuits it's not necessary to use 1/2W resistors. I use 'em though they're more easy to read.

Is this in the FAQ? I think this is the second time I've seen this question in a week.

1/2 watt resistors seem to have lower noise and they generally can stand twice the voltage that 1/4 resistors can.

For pedals, the voltage won't matter. I have never tried an A/B comparison for noise.

The 1/2 's take up too much room in my opinion. Unless I stand them on end. But sometimes thats all I got so...

I really like 1/8 watt resistors.  They're very small and take up hardly any room.  And to my ears, I can't hear any "worsening" to the sound.
