Title: Replacing 2n5088 with 2n5089
Post by: shawsofhell on January 28, 2004, 10:21:27 PM
Hi, I've already asked this question before but I just want to ask it again I'm wanting to replacing some 2n5088's in some circuits with 2n5089's instead the reason I'm doing this is because I hear the 2n5089 has less noise and more gain. Will I have to perform any mods to the following cicuits if I make this change:

EA TREM: http://www.runoffgroove.com/eatremolo.html
Big Muff
Small Stone
Small Clone

Don't expect more gain in these circuits just because you're using a higher hFE transistor.  In most circuits, the gain is set by resistors (e.g. the ratio of collector to emitter resistance) or similar, and the device operates at a much lower gain than the hFE.  In the EA tremolo, the 2N5088 isn't even in the signal path.
Certainly, the 5089 will work fine in both the tremolo and the Big Muff.  Don't know about the others, but I suspect it will work fine.
Title: Take 'noise notes'

Let me know...This question I thinks the answer to Ppl telling me about 5089's [like the data sheet says] being high gain'/low noise...course most 'normal' noises don't bother me too bad usually...it's those ones that start talking to me...when they start doing that it makes me paranoid...

Sorry Pete...was there a question in there?  You are a bit of a worry sometimes...hearing voices and all.......

Sometimes these ckt's can make funny noises, more than just hiss.
Some of the Ge stuff and even the Piggyback TBooster tunes in RF...I know I gotta do something about it... when I know Im going to want to use it, and I know it'll probly be driving me nuts!!!

It should work fine. I wouldn't unsolder transistors for the change though.
