i had a Univox tape echo that used a loop of standard [ I got this super heavy duty reel of it] reel to reel type tape and I could just cut and splice a new one...nice...
  Alot of heaters and moving parts make some fantastic or not so fantastic echoes depending on the 'conditions'...as I remember we had to 'get inside' that thing a few times as it progressively deteriorated and eventually died...
  Good news is if you can rebuild and retube it. you got yerself one killer echo device... could be tricky too,
