What do you guys think of this band (particularly you guys from the U.K.)? What kind of stance do you take when talking about them? I tend to say that they're a mix of Rush, Led Zep, and Spinal Tap.

QuoteWhat kind of stance do you take
Well, the "I am a Rock God and this here guitar is my, um, member" stance, o'course. Bring on the foil-wrapped zukinis.
They're great IMHO. Not very serious, but great fun. You're very right to include Tap in there ;)
I love 'em!!! According to their singer and lead guitarist Justin Hawkins "playing guitar solos makes your balls bigger" :D
They're playing a sold out show in Amsterdam tonight and I didn't manage to get tickets :x :x :x
not bad for an oldschool newer sounding glam band. i think the truth will come out on the 2nd cd as far as if they are here to stay around for a while or not .
peace,

I love it when men sing falsetto! No, I'm not!

I think they're happily retarded -- I think they're great! :)
Although, if it's not meant to be at least a little tongue-in-cheek I'll be frightened.
Jim
I wouldn't consider them "glam", tho... More like "80's Metal Revival". They're good. Wether it's a spoof or not, I don't care. I'll still listen to them.
I'm sure there is a few of us here that grew up on that stuff (like me) and think it's kinda cool, regardless of what other people say. Old-school metal is the kind of stuff I like to play!
Yeah, I share similar opinions. I got it this weekend and think its awesome. I brought it to work yesterday and had one guy think it was cool out of 6, but "they just don't get it". haha. I still haven't decided whether or not to take them seriously, but I still like them.
I hated them at first, but they've definitely grown on me in the past two weeks or so. Definitly has the kicked-in-the-crotch-geddy-lee sound.
Two words:

Hi guys
I'm from the UK and always wondered how The Darkness would go down in the US, from your sense of humour point of view. I'm glad you like them and are not taking them as serious as they take themselves, as I have heard from a few good sources that they totally believe in what they are doing.
I can't take them serious at all as they're from a town called Lowestoft, which is the US equivalent of Delaware or something - not a very rock n roll town!!! Still they're great for guitar music and seem to be getting people interested in playing again here in the UK. Which is a good thing.
The problem with being so retro is that sooner or later those influences are going to go out of fashion and people are going to wonder why they ever liked them. Limp Bizkit ring a bell anyone?
As an out of subject question, what did you guys in the US think when the Office won best comedy at the Grammy's, and have you ever watched it?

When it comes to badly-written derivative music, people eat that shit up world-wide...
...however, when it comes to The Office, I quite enjoyed the first series, and will get the second when it comes out on DVD here. Or, I guess I should say, "when the video store that rents DVDs for $1.00 a night down the street gets it in" :)

I love them...sort of too many recycled "best of"-albums thrown into one but with an obvious sence of humor...and the reason it sells simply must be that for someone 13-14 years old its brand new...just the same way recycled Beatles, T-rex, Sly&family and motown songs where new to those of us growing up in the eighties...
Johan
Any music that (a) makes you smile and (b) isn't too serious is good music where I come from.
Justin from The Darkness has a tattoo of flames rising up from below his belt to his navel. When the bass player was asked to reveal just how far down the flames went, he replied, "All the way to the kindling"!
Mates of mine played "I believe in a thing called love" at a gig recently. It was easy to play (they tell me), and sounded fantastic. The audience (including me) tried to sing along but it's hard not to laugh. 8)
But, didn't you guys feel just a little grossed out when you realized that "Holding My Own" was a ballad about wankin'? (listen for the shuddering climatic sigh at the end, ewww!) Fun stuff overall, though.
heh, i saw them recently and before i'd actually seen them play i was in the 'just don't get it' camp. but yeah, they're definately tongue in cheek, and i definately dig it now i get it!
if they can come up with something that's not les paul -> marshall stack for the next album i'll be happier listening to it tho. we've all heard that tone before ;)
maybe i should send them a highway 89! hahahaha

 Heresy!!! Release the lions!!!
I just saw the video for "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" today, and it was excellent. Someone earlier made a comparison to Spinal Tap, and I would have to agree. Great song, great video. I love the humor.
Alex
What a great band :D
I think they could be the saviours of British Hard Rock. (Just like Maiden 20 years ago)
They rock! Lets hope they bring proper rock back to the radio. (Makes a change from a load of girly boy bands 8)

Heresy is right!!! If I ever hear a better tone than a Les Paul through an old Marshall I'll promptly shite my drawers. :)

hey! im 13 ( almost 14 yay  ) and its not new to me! i consider myself to be knowing about the "oldskool" :) bands.
on the subject of what they sound like, i would have to agree that they do sound like led zep, and all the others suggested. also, in most of their videos ( yes i was brought up on mtv, like most of the youth today ) and they are definately paying homage to led zep, just have a look at what they are waering most of the time 8)

You're hardly an 'average' 13 year old if you're posting on this forum. That's a compliment. And hermorphordites are from Hades.

random things edited because i thought my post was too short include:
what should i build next? a tremolo using an led+ldr operation and a 555 timer, or the little jem/ ruby amp?
secondly (and lastly), what sort of music is everyone listenin to at the mo'?
callum (yet again :) )
I reall like the guitar sound. And what's not to like about the video, talk about super-cheese, and with MTV rotation. Dig the bass player's headband-Rock!

You should build whatever you want, but on a practical note, a little gem/Ruby can make you more popular about the house as you can practice at much reduced volume.

thanks, i think i will make the ruby then,
i have to get a bread board, and some decent perfboard, the stuff i got sold last time was stripboard :( and i didnt gat time to check :(

I've just got to say it, The Darkness do not resemble Zep or Rush to me. Geddy certainly does not need to resort to falsetto to hit his raptor-like highs. I'm sick of hearing any comparisons to Zepplin--they're gods. The Darkness are not worthy enough to touch the hem of Jimmy's sacred dragon embroided flares. That is my opinion. I think that Justin Hawkins does have a great falsetto, though. This is what his voice sounds like to me: Todd Rundgren, mixed with the bare-front bodystocking look and vocal pyrotechnics of Freddy Mercury, and just a hint of the master of metal Rob Halford, but nonetheless, not in any of their league. The rhythm section is not up to par of any aforementioned groups; however, the bass player is the coolest thing about the band. The guitar work, while not original, does sound fresh compared to what else is going on compared to some guitar bands. Some of the overdubbed solo sections are reminescent of Brian May's work. Me likey! So what if they're the derivative bastard-child of Spinal Tap, tears well up in my eyes as I listen to these guys do equal parts mockery and tribute to my beloved bands of yesteryear.
My question is, when will their current drummer spontaneously combust?
Does anyone remember Scatterbrain?? The Darkness has picked up the torch that Scatterbrain dropped 12 years ago. Man those guys were good, too. Funny-Technical at times.
One of my fave albums is "Through the Darkness" by Degeneration. As for the band "the Darkness"? Well..............
Jered
Maybe another way to look at this is to put them up against current "popular" bands. Nickelback, Linkin Park, Staind... C'mon - no contest! Long live the Darkness! :)
Jim
All this talk about Spinal Tap reminded me of this for whatever reason . . .

My friends band, practicing in our basement - his guitar tone blew me away - it was a newish maple neck Tele he did some mods on, running into an older Marshall. Just f'in perfect. I was ready to trade in my LP after that.
(though lately, I'm an SG into a Hiwatt and couldn't be more thrilled)

I was blown away by the office season one. I'm not suprised it would win a Grammy due to lack of quality, but that it seemed a little on the fringe for the american audience (as far as I can tell). I'm eagerly awaiting the 2nd season of the Office, but am pessimistic about League of Gentlemen Season 2 making it to the states, which I'd be more excited about.

pity that guitarists don't use effect pedals but their balls!
