Title: Hendrix Monterey sound: how to get it? [ :-) ]
Post by: nooneknows on February 11, 2004, 03:22:44 PM
Hi,
I know this question could sound stupid (it is), but do you remember the sound of the first part of Wild Thing? That beautiful not-so-distorted-but-the-amp-is-blowing sound?
Ok, I'd have to run a plexi at '12' through vintage cones, but is there a distorsion circuit similiar in sound around?
Any idea is welcomed
thanx

That's 'cone cry' there pardner, and a out of tune, doomed strat, just a teeny bit of LDS.

A Strat, a wha ,an univibe(on bypass mode),a silicon Fuzz-Face at full knobs,AND A WALL OF MARSHALL AMPS FULLY CRANCKED-UP!
That's IT!

If you are talking about the famous Montery show then he didn't have the Univibe or a Si FF. Neither were around then. I'm not sure he even had the wha there. I haven't listen to the show in awhile. The wah appeared mid way through the first tour. I don't belive that Jimi ran the FF all the time either so it could just be a Strat and Marshalls/speakers getting ready to die. Most amps sound cool just before they are going to die.

Jimi absolutely ran a FF @Montery, but it was Ge not Si. Remember that was June '67, he hadn't even completed "Axis, and I don't believe the silicons FF's were out yet. A Ge FF, only 1 beat up plexi 100 stack, a black and white strat, and of course the flipped out painted one, which got burnt and smashed. :) 8)

Just listen to the first solo in "Killing Floor"... That's a Ge FF if I've ever heard one!

Right Dave. The famous 1973 documentary movie has most of the Monterey clips on it, and you can see what he had. And chemically, all the interviews I read said it was STP, not LSD. I dont know if affects tone like Ge vs. Si. Killing Floor was unbelieveable! Hey Joe: middle solo played with the teeth, ending solo behind the back. The one and only!

I haven't seen it in awhile, but I thik Jimi may have been using Sunn Coliseum amps for Monterey, not Marshalls.

Watch the movie, Bwan.  You can see when he f$cks the amp stack at the end of Wild Thing, it ain't no Sunn!!  :)

I've seen the show a thousand of times and, although I've never really focused on the matter, I can't' remember any box on the stage floor, just a spiral cable from the strat to the Plexi through the high treble channel, no jumper.
How about Aron's booster 2.5 to simulate that boiling and blowing plexi?
I've seen there's another topic about, I didn't see first (sorry), but I'm still curious.
thanx

Buid the axis fuzz.
use a larger input cap
go with 570 k instead of 680 k to bias Q1
use 3.3 uf or 4.7 uf instead of 22uf coming from Q1 (less mud)
for Q2 use NTE 458 (no octave)
use a 100k trimpot for the 47k from Q1 to Q2 I don't set this for max gain
an input volume on the box with a .0047 uf high pass cap can help too
play with your guitar's volume cleans up fuzz

You won't get monterey,  but you might enjoy it and your amp won't have to be at eviction levels but thats an effect too.
This gets me a nice spanish castle magic sound, raw but in a good way

Strat > Ge FF > Marshall.  Make sure to use coil cables to get rid of the ice pick sound.

Where would one view the Monterey performance?  I have been looking for it for the longest time, and no stores carry it around me.  The only thing I have seen is the complete Monterey Pop Festival DVD set, for $75.  Is there a VCD or something that I could buy off of someone here or trade for something?

I have seen clips of his Monterey set, and his main amp is definately the single Plexi stack, but to the left of it looks to be a Fender - maybe a Bassman head.

Hi,

i think the sound is produced by a broken Amp or Speaker..
I saw a documentation about Hendrix, but it was a Biography with Actors, no real szenes (most of them).
And at this Gig he played after TheWho, is it right?

Pete gave the Marshall Stacks some Hits at the End of his Gig (in the Docu)
So it might be a broken Amp (Tubes or something, or as postet above)
a broken Speaker...

Take a Hammer and try to reissue that Sound

bye

Some time last year I rented 'Jimi at Montery' which contained the entire performance and that broken speaker sound didn't occur until Wild Thing when I think he just maxed out everything on the Marshall and was generating some serious speaker distortion or 'cone cry'. He was out to out-do the Who's crash bang smasho ending cause they made him go on last, and while I love the Who, I think Jimi won that day, but the Who probably won at Isle Of Wight.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

RE the RM axis mods mentioned above;
Quoteuse 3.3 uf or 4.7 uf instead of 22uf coming from Q1 (less mud)

I take it that Q1 is the 2N3906.  So the 22uF is the AC connector to ground through the "drive" pot?  If so, doesn't reducing the size of the cap *reduce* the low frequency losses to ground?  ie adding more bass and potential muddiness?

Or do you mean the 22uF cap on the emitter of the 2N3904?  Reducing that one would reduce the gain a smidgen and might clean up the sound. ???

thanks for any guidance

Oops! NOW I see it.

The 22uF IS the one near the 3906.  BECAUSE it conducts less bass to ground, there's MORE BASS FEEDBACK, and less bass volume and less mudiness.  Should have seen it before!
