First off...Great looking site!  It looks like there was a lot of time involved developing it.

Second...What does the "Vulcan" do?  What kinda circuit is it?

Title: What's RGB?
Post by: petemoore on February 22, 2004, 10:38:43 AM
One of the schematics is labelled RGB Cycler...what does this mean?

It uses a 3-color LED to cycle through the color spectrum.

Yeah, I WILL build this as my next pedal. I think I have all the parts, and here I will have three days of holidays in this week, so I think I will build it as soon as I can.

Vul´can
Noun   1.   Vulcan - (Roman mythology) god of fire and metal working;

Eagerly awaiting build reports on this one. Might even put that darned breadboard I never use to work.

Cool as ever Joe.  I still haven't build the mosfet Obsidian yet, and now another one, plut the Gyroboost???

Thanks for providing all the cool distortion stages.

Our 'original', original band's name is the "VULCANS".
I have the Les Paul case with stickers from halls around the country on it, with 'the VULCAN"S' Logo Boldly enamouring the inside of the top of the case in [Marksalot] angled upward script...old 'steady hand' graphics !!!

Beautiful graphics, Joe! I like your diode idea in the Vulcan. Will have to digest it some more.

Nice! :D

OK Joe, as standard procedure you need to compare and contrast each new distortion you come out with to the old ones, so we will know what we are missing.  Thanks.   8)

Thanks for the nice comments!

The Vulcan gain stage has a sound & feel I couldn't get with the Blackfire. All I can say is I thought it was more "real" sounding. When the crappy input dynamics of the BJT are defeated, the thing sounds good!

The cool part is the diode improves the JFET, too. One downside to this is the low-gain of the JFET, a high-gain overdrive requires like 5 stages. The other caveat is that 2-resistor biasing is required, so that the input diode is forward-biased.

I should probably mention one of the reasons I try to share. People tell me to market this or that, and I should keep it secret, get a patent, etc. My personal opinion is that to claim ownership to something god gave you is a serious blunder. If someone wants to steal, it won't be stolen from me.

would this diode compression reduce clipping in an op amp ?

I added a "downloads" section to my home page, there you can find a pcb for the vulcan.

I have not tested it yet, so please let me know how it goes if you use it.

Thanks Joe for sharing with us!

Joe, any advice/mod for us hot humbucker users?

Thanks in advance.

I'm curious.  In the context of my 1973 post, it doesn't appear the Joe's distortion circuits are using any new parts, are these new applications for old circuit designs, or new circuits?  In other words, these circuits could have been used several decades ago, if we had known about them, or they had been invented???

I am using a GE Black Fire stage that sounds really nice.  I have also used it with a GE/Mosfet combo.  Future Primative   8)

How about substituting 2N5088? any noticeable issues?

Any PCB layout coming for this Vulcan?

Good attitude Joe!  I don't say that because    (hahaha) ~I get the benefit of great FX for FREE

...but, because I also hold a similar view about things that I come up with.  It looks like, in the end, if I want to sell my stuff and I can show from my notes and dated records that I was the original, it is less likely that I will get into trouble for distributing and/or selling my own stuff, even if somebody else DOES try to patent it (from my understanding).  Besides, how can somebody claim common knowledge for themselve?  If it's posted on the Web and many people view it daily, who can claim it for themselves?

But, like you said, claiming ownership to something God gave you is a serious blunder...and I guess the risk of somebody else "stealing" it and claiming ownership of it is worth the benefit it has contributed to the "honest hobbyists who just want some unique sounds" DIY community.

Keep up the good work Joe!  I know you've been showered with the blessings of us all, need I say more?

do you think it's possible to use germanium trannies in this or the blackfire circuit with proper bias?

I'm using 2 GE's in a Black Fire Stage right now, with the standard resistor values.  I'd recomment getting the highest hFe that Small Bear has for sale.

You can rebias a Vulcan or Blackfire stage to accomodate any transistor type. PNP Vulcans won't work right because of the diodes. (Untried: A PNP transistor configured as a diode may work in the Vulcan.) Hot humbucker users should alter the parallel resistor/cap values after the gain control, raising the resistance and lowering the capacitance proportionally.

I haven't tried opamps with diode-inputs, but will eventually. With these circuits, the tonal difference between BJT/JFET/MOSFET is not great, besides the amount of available gain.

To my knowledge, the amplifier stages (Vulcan, Blackfire 1/2) are "new". There is a circuit similar to the BF stage whose purpose is to raise frequency response, but that's the only one I'm aware of at this time.

Well thanx guys!. Thanks Joe for sharing and for amazing designs!. I've built a blackfire with bc109c, and doug's highway, using the blackfire stage, with bc549c, but still can hear a little hard edge of silicon in there, that's why i was asking that. I'll give this a try with some ac187, ac127, and 2sd352 i have lying around. Thanks again!!.
