Not only are there 24 trimpots (count em) but there's also a 4pdt.  How absurd...

Title: SPOT THE POT
Post by: V!N on March 04, 2004, 06:14:01 PM
Behold the 25th trimpot ! :)

There's another one in by the white spaghetti, near the orange wire.

And I thought mikeb had a lot of pots on the IP. :)

Well, all of my pots do something ... and there are 4 trimpots also!  8)

The post-production tweaking of that Maxon pedal must be a QA nightmare.

11 IC chips?!? What does this thing do?

It looks like a bunch of the shorter BBDs casscading to make up a long total delay time. I would suspect that the pots are for biasing each BBD.

I read the part # to be MC41070, which brings up nothing on google, but I'm pretty sure they're all BBDs cascaded for a longer delay time (1 second, I believe).  Must sound terrible.

I'm guessing so, I'm surprised not to find ANY info on the net about it.

They are MC4107D. Here is the only link that Yahoo gave me:

This looks like a pedal built for the Eric Johnsons of the world:
Eric:  "I thought take 458 was good too, but let's open the back and turn trimpot 17 an eigth of a turn to see how that sounds"
Recording Engineer:  "Dammmmm!"

So if there's 11 chips and 900ms (880 to make the equation easier) each BBD must be supplying up to 80ms of delay... meaning that they're all probably around 2048 stage, no?

Anyone own any Maxon pedals?  They are certainly talked up a bit high in the ads.  That TS clone made out to be a tube amp in a box...what a joke.

That kind of advertising immediately makes me suspicious....so for you future guitar FX marketing people out there:  give a good honest assessment of your pedals, and the quality will speak for itself.  You don't need anybody to tell you how good a pedal sounds unless you're not able to tell on your own...then go buy a Rogue or something and save yourself some money.

Wow! You could wear out your free samples welcome trying to build that beast

Speaking of laughs, for april fool's day, you could post the schematic for that in the beginner's section

No, really   would be offering a 'pre-clone' of ZVex's up-and-coming seek trem on ebay on April 1. I had a bit of a play around with a seek-wah-like core hooked up to a 4ms tremulus, and it sounds bloody good actually! Another winner for ZV I'm sure.  8)

lol! Or this: offer your new fuzz pedal on eBay and show a picture of the Maxon board to throw off the "cloners".

Would make a great build: 11 IC's, 25 trimpots, and a bottle of Prozac for debugging!

I'm with Colin,
That things nuts!
All those trim pots are going to be a "long-term"
reliability nightmare.
my 2 cents,
Ed R.

I own a Maxon (Caxon?) treble booster from the late 70s/early 80s.  It's supposed to make your guitar scream, but the only thing it ever made scream were the poor sods who had to endure the ear-scorching treble it imparts!

I'd have one of those new ones though, trim pots & all...if it were given to me...Santa, are you listening?

dealing with overengineered stuff all the time at work, this looks fine to me.  Looks like a design based in reality..  i talk to engineers every now and then that are very knowlegable when it comes to theory, but lack the knowlege of real world solutions, and acceptable short cuts, and time savers.

From www.maxonfx.com:
===============
Q) What is the relationship between Maxon and Ibanez?

A) Nisshin Onpa Company (Maxon) is an audio electronics manufacturer that has been in business since the mid-1960s. In the early 1970's they developed a line of compact guitar effect units and marketed them in Japan (these models are currently available as the Maxon Reissue Series). The Hoshino Trading Company (Ibanez) soon took notice and licensed the designs from Maxon for distribution around the globe under the Ibanez brand name.

From that time up until early 2002 Maxon was responsible for the design and manufacture of many Ibanez products, including the legendary TS808 and TS-9 Tubescreamers, the rare and collectible Flying Pan, and the popular SoundTank series.

Over the years the companies did less and less business together, until the only unit being built by Maxon was the TS-9 Reissue. In early 2002 Maxon ceased manufacture of the TS-9 Reissue for Ibanez and began marketing several of the original Nine Series models under their own Maxon brand name.

As for the AD- 999 sounding horrible, I wouldn't be so sure of that by just looking at a photo of the board.
