Hey all,
Anyone know of anywhere on the internet where I can buy things in...well maybe not bulk but maybe twenty or thirty at a time for a good or better price? I am aware of places that sell bulk and give price breaks of a few cents for a hundred or more pieces or something similar, but I'm looking for surplus kind of stuff I guess.
Pots, jacks, assorted capacitors, leds, and switches?

Just try search engines for the components. I've had some great scores off ebay. Use their search function. They also have email alerts to let you know when something comes up.
Of course there's a lot of junk on there too. But if you know what you want, and spend a little time researching what is a good price before you bid, you can get some good deals. Caps, resistors, led's, diodes, and IC's are on there all the time.
PS-just don't buy the $50 JRC4558D though..LOL! :shock:

It's been a long while since I've ordered from them, but Electronics Goldmine ( http://www.goldmine-elec.com ) has some good deals sometimes. If yr just stocking your parts bin, their "Gold Paks" are sometimes good deals, sometimes they have really good deals on op-amps or transistor sockets or wire - and they have a lot of neat stuff in their monthly fliers.
Hey Matt, they don't often give price breaks but Ford Elecronics and Orvac Electronics often get pallets of random stuff that they blow out cheap. Both are in Fullerton.

But, when you see some quality name brand components on ebay for less than half price, you want to find
their sources. Factory over-runs, end of business auctions, govt. surplus, etc. I'd like to get on line on things like that. When you were running full time, did you ever score on those kind of deals?

Stoked to hear of more places to go in OC, I was unaware of those. I tried looking in the phone book but ended up calling a bunch of places who mostly turned out to be non-retail businesses. Around here I mostly go to Sav-On in garden grove, and Marvac in costa mesa which I like most, and another place in westminster. None really have a lot of surplus stock so I am glad to learn of the places in Fullerton, thanks Jered.
I found a couple large lots on Ebay and would be interested if anyone wanted to go in on a massive lot. I don't need too many parts but am looking to buy a variety of caps, and some jacks, switches, leds, and tranny sockets, and some wire too.

If you are building in quantity, there is a danger that some surplus bargain weill come along, you grab some & design it into your circuit, and then one day you need more & they are all gone (or, worse, someone has them at outrageous price!)

Indeed I have considered that... When I first bought parts a while back to build an Anderton Tremolo, the CLM600 was still being made by ...clairex? I think that's the manuf....now discontinued.
Yeah I did notice that. I always go check on usps and ups websites to calculate shipping costs and sometimes the seller's quote higher shipping costs, even if you calculate packaging, its still high. And, you're right, that's how they seem to make their money, not only on surplus lots or large component lots but on a lot of other auction items as well. Definitely something to consider.

Hi Matt, those russian caps had brutal shipping. I still say Ebay is a good place to find deals. But like I said earlier, you have to research the price elsewhere first, and take shipping into account. I recently scored 200 Ge diodes at less than half of the best retail price I could find. That included shipping.
BTW, congratulations! You had one of the few threads this year where a celeberty popped in, helped out, and didn't get harassed, flamed, or pestered about their effects. :D
I am a big ebay fan too, I get NOS metal film resistors, 100 for $2. Have gotten great deals on caps as well. You have to shop around. I've found a few suppliers who are awesome, and sometimes include free stuff (pens, etc).

Lol! What I meant Matt was that Mr. Huge popped in to help. If you've caught of couple of those threads, there's been too many this new year where some of the Pro's stopped by to help, and the thread derailed into the five page flame thread. An ill mannered way of thanking them for all their help. So it was nice to see one pop in, help out, and not get insulted. Stand-up guys. That's all.
