Im looking to build a warm, bluesy overdrive pedal that is very transparent, cleans up nicely from the volume pot, and doesnt suffer from intermodulation distortion. Any suggestions?
I hear the Blue Magic fits that description pretty well. Look it up at generalguitargadgets.com. Let us know how it comes out, I am kind of interested in that build. Good luck.
I have a Blue Magic on the workbench now but I haven't finshed it yet. hopefully over the weekend so I'll let everyone know how it turns out.
Blue Magic, definitely. Peppermill (RunOffGroove) probably.
BluesBreaker is great - probably better than a tubescreamer for what you want. The Odie is kinda nice, too, but fairly high gain.
cheers
Scroll down to my Highway 89 soundclip and see what you think:

If you like it, email me at dougbhammond@yahoo.com and I'll send you the schem.

Hi,
I built the Blue Magic a few days ago. It is the best overdrive pedal I have ever heard!!! Well, I am not a real professional guitar player and I had not the chance to compare with a lot of pedals, but in comparison to my Ibanez ST-9 Tubescreamer it is definitely my/the choice. A friend of mine tried it and will build one as well. He tried several OD pedals before ........... It is very easy to build and to trim. I put the Blue Magic in front of my Peavey Classic 30. It works fine for bluesy and rockin tunes.....
Keep on rockin'
Stefan
Another option is the TC Double Drive, although it looks like a bit of a harder build. Pretty good flexibility in that one.
Stupid Box.

I'll second the Blues Breaker, I built one this past weekend and it's my favorite that I'e built so far. I think the tone could be called transparent, the terms people use to describe sounds with are always sort of subjective. I still haven't quite figured out what a "brown sound" is. :?

I second that. Built one the other week from tomboys layout, and you can get an interesting variety of overdrives.
Question about the blue magic build: did you use the recommended cap dielectrics, or whatever was handy?
