can anyone recommend a circuit that will giv me total distortion (that is to say, squarewave distortion)

preferably not too hard to build

Try two in series or make your own with more stages than the "normal" one. hehehehehe

You will find a circuit called Digital Octaver Fuzz in Tim Escobedo's site. You can jump the second part of the IC, hard-wiring the octave knob in the fuzz position, and you will get a square wave fuzz.
