Title: My first project... Big muff Mod!
Post by: Kai on March 24, 2004, 02:10:09 PM
Hey!

I have been wanting to do a mod on my elctro harmonix usa big muff reissue for sometime now but i have never got round to it, now i am really eager to do it and i wondered if you guys could give me an helping hand!

1.make my Muff much more smoother as it is very harsh

2.improve the sustain as the notes are dying out too quick

3.fix the volume drop.

Any help would be appreciated as it is my first ever project :)

Thanks

Kyle

is the volume drop when it is on or when it is bypassed?

okay. if you want to smooth it out a little, replace the back to back silicon diodes in each stage with germanium ones, and that will soften it up a bit.

The volume control is to set the volume when the effect is on.

Or do you mean, the output volume is lower as bypass even with the volume maxed out? That might indicate there is something wrong.....

I don't know what the reissues look like inside, but here's what I've done with a couple of vintage BMPs and they sound terrific.

1) Replace all exisiting .1 caps (big greens) with cheap ceramic disc .1 caps.

2) Replace all exisiting 1.0 caps (electrolytic barrels) with cheap ceramic disc .1 caps.

You'll have an amazing new pedal.

To minimize changes to the circuit boards, I just pop one leg of the existing caps out and wire my new caps to the underside of the board. That way I can fairly easily get back to stock if I ever want to.

When i put the effect on the volume seems to dip a little (kind of like the small stone)

Thanks for the help :)

thanks for the tip, will this improve the sustain or just the tone?
