Title: 4116 ics ...any ideas?
Post by: swt on March 27, 2004, 01:18:34 PM
I have four of these, that came in a ready to solder delay ( that never worked) . I guess they are memories. Any idea or good design for these ones?. Thanks a lot!

4116s are old dynamic RAMs.
they need a refresh circuit.
Better 2 stick with static-RAM.
I Blieve the old EH-16sec delay used 4116s.
Lots of them.
The refresh circuitry is complex...
Static RAMs R soooo cheap now....

IIRC, electronicall theres  a lot of similarity between the 4116 and 4164's (apart from the obvious difference that the '64 isa higher capacity).  Maybe you can spot the error by comparing with different schematics.

Some of those early ram chips use to fry easily, perhaps from static, so it's worth keeping in mid the rams may be damaged (unlikely all of them though).

Hehehe.

The good old Apple ][ used 4116s. I still remember when my Dad upgraded from 16K to 32K and the cost was about $250 for the eight chips (450ns access time).

You could troubleshoot them really easily because the bad chips would always be stone cold or scalding hot with the good ones were nice and warm.

The 4116 is a PITA chip for sure. It needs +5, +12, and -5 to function.

The 4164 reduced the power requirements to just +5 and also added a self refresh function (not all 4164s had this) using pin 1 IIRC.

Thankfully those chips have gone the way of the dodo bird. SRAMs are cheap and dense these days do I would forget about the 4116s. Sorry.

Take care,
-Peter

...i once built a delay using the one bit a/d and D/a (sigma delta)..it used 8 4116..from " Nuova Eletronica"...do you have the schematic of the ready to solder delay you have?
thanks,

Was I mistaken, or was there some sort of a DIY project floating around with a more commonly obtainable (in modern times) stick of ram?  I remember a picture of wires coming off of it...

i'm afraid i don't have the schem. But it was a big pcb. looks like an interesting project. a friend of mine gave it to me because it never worked. I have never tried to solve the problem, but also don't have the right circuit, or messed with ics like these. Thanks for the replies guys.
Maneco...your mp3 are awesome, man. I was in punta del este in the summer, wish i heard them before, to make a stop in montevideo, to have a chat. Are you gigging, or at least playing somewhere in there?

it's a pity we couldn´t´meet last summer,i was in Piriapolis, that's 30km of Punta del Este...
Thanks for your feedback on my songs...we played last month in Argentina, and plan to start gigging now in Montevideo...our new drummer is great...i feel like an "orchestra man",because, besides playing guitar,i'm triggering loops on an sp303 by a remote footswitch i built...or maybe i'm a frustrated tap dancer

there will be a next time, i'm sure. uruguay is a fantastic place to go on vacation. Do you have a cd to buy, or it's just a gigging band?. Good luck, my friend, that's my wish. Hope you become known worldwide. interesting guitar concept and playing.
