Title: Where to find cheap components?
Post by: MattAnonymous on March 31, 2004, 09:19:24 PM
I was wondering if there was a place that I could get a bunch of pots and 1/4" jacks for cheap.  An audio taper 100k pot at RS is like $3.  I think two mono jacks is about the same.

i like Circuit Specialists (//www.circuitspecialists.com) they are pretty cheap, and give you a free DMM with a 50 buck order... even tests capacitance... their cutomer service is AMAZING, they forgot my dmm one time, i called em... they sent me another one, it didn't work, and they sent me another one no questions asked...

NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!! and i kept the broken one...

lol sorry, i wandered...

I have had excellent service from Circuit Specialists and Mouser; they're definitely the two sources I go to first when I need to order components.

Edit: below posts mention smallbear; I've actually never ordered from Small Bear but I hear they're incredible as well :-D

Mouser, Smallbear, and Circuit Specialists are great. I've also had real good luck with Digikey, especially for the Panasonic 1uf metal film caps that are really small (P4675-ND):

Also Jameco Electronics, who carry 1N270 Ge Diodes, and cheap enclosures, amongst other things:

Small Bear doesn't have the absolute cheapest prices around on everything, but the prices are reasonably low and fair, many things are generally unavailable elsewhere, and the components are deliberately selected for the things you want to build.  For some people, even more important is the flexibility provided in getting things to you regardless of where you live.  SBE is small enough that your order doesn't get swallowed up by the machinery of a big organization.

Personally, I buy my 16mm Alpha pots (and many of my other components) at a small place in Toronto for 70 cents@ (Cdn).  I've never ordered from them by mail but if the Toronto parking by-law enforcement people get any more aggressive I may have to.
