Gonna throw a passive tone circuit in a Vulcan. Think it would be best before or after the third gain stage?

I tried many variations of the big muff tone stack, and when put after the third gain stage, it always sounded "muffled" to me.

Are you using humbuckers or single coils?

The Big Muff tone stage sounds fine after the last major gain stage, but it needs the Muff output stage too. Other tone stacks behave similarly.
