Both, but the Bass I actually own is a short scale one and I tend to play it more like a guitar anyways.

Bass, 5-string. Bearable. I suppose my band mates slowly start to think I should spend more time in my practicing than in building stompboxes.
However, it took me some time to realise that with the 31 Hz (or is it 30) of the low B-string you run into some special problems when trying to adapt guitar boxes for bass.
But browsing through this pages really helps. By the way: thanks to all answering my posts!!

I play guitar mostly, but I play bass a lot in the studio, and filling in on some gigs for friends. I also bridge the gap by playing a Fender Bass VI, which is basically a guitar, an octave lower (or a bass with two extra high strings)

As Mick Jagger is reputed to have said when asked how the Stones would replace Bill Wyman, "It's only got four strings. How hard can it be?"

This was the basis (excuse pun) of my taking up bass in my teens. Now I prefer to play guitar. But my guitar club has about 30 guitarists and four bass players. Next gig, I'll be playing bass for one number, but I know what will happen - "Four of us are playing 'Hotel California' next time - so would you play bass for us?"

By the way, anyone else out there taking accordion lessons?  :)

I picked up playing the bass lsat year in music class. No-one could play properly so I thought that I'd put down a reasonable performance. I mean it's the last 4 strings on a guitar but an octave lower. Easy-peasy, unless you start doing something different from single-note riffs

But that's how I 'learnt' to play the bass a little. I occasionally still play the bass, usually when I'm repairing the school's bass guitar cos some idiot broke it. Never let 13 year-old "I don't care, it isn't mine" kids near musical instruments, no good will come of it.

Every time I pick up a bass, I want to start playing chords and I run out of strings.  :P

Take care,
-Peter

I'm afraid that most of my mates are like that too :( but im not i care for instruments... although completely refurbishing my guitar isnt gonna be nice to it... im gonna spray it with black and silver sprinkles... (for the girls  8) ) and do the black ice mod to it... and replace the components becasue they are fairly warn :(
I wish i could play bass... but the guitar always felt more natural... plus you try to find a squire lefthanded bass + amp combo.... not easy :D

I am primarily a guitar player, but I'm not clueless about what to do if somebody slaps a bass into my hands.

I just don't consider myself a "bass-player" because I'm not able to get that solid, unshakeable bass sound that a good bass player gets.  I'm more of a 'thump thump thump twang tried to slap and it sounds like crap' bass player.  I play it like the good ol' 6 string g-tar.  Being an FX geek and engineer, at least I know what to do with the tone knobs and how to use them to somewhat mask my lack of ability.

Get a 6-string bass and tune it like a guitar.  I hope your fingers are long. Chords done right on a bass sound amazing.  I can only speak in reference to bass players that I have listened to.
