Title: OT: self-classification
Post by: Somicide on April 10, 2004, 02:43:36 AM
the 'talent' thread got me thinking about this.

how many times have you guys been asked to classify your original styles in terms of rock, metal, new-wave, etc?

I ask because as a high school senior, my little band and i decided we're playing at school, and when we talked to the ASB office, they wanted to know what we played; my response?  "we play... uh... uh...  good question... (turn to drummer)  what do we play?"

after a good 5 minutes, we came up with psuedo classic rock, because our beats are simple (usually) but we have weirder influences (modest mouse, anyone?)

At every club I play where someone asks I say without hesitation: "POLKA". If they press further I say: "I'd like to talk further, but I must change into my Lederhosen".

Modest Mouse?  Sweet.  Love the mouse, but I'm not such a big fan of Isaac by his lonesome, even though his music is always ridiculously good.  My brother does a lot of work with Califone/Tim Rutili.

Have you heard the new album yet?  I heard the original mixes, they were good.

back when I used to run sound at clubs - I'd ask every band, during set-up, what they sounded like... I swear that every band that came in would answer the question with 'we're COMPLETELY original, man'

to which I'd usually respond.. 'great, so I don't know how to make you sound - so I guess it'll sound like s&*t... you  sure you don't resemble some band I'd know?'

'uhh... soundgarden'

thanks.

I sound like crap, simple and plain =D

I play a very improvisational minor-stlye when i am by myself, and when i get down the most.

when i'm playing with my band, i play just weird rhythms and unusual progressions... a juicy amount of distortion, some wah here and there.

and yet still, im very unhappy with my sound. its almost there...

but the wonderful music in my heart seems to not speak the same language of my hands and my brain.

Q. What do you play?
A. Non-threatening, distilled punkrock with artificial flavors of rebellion, dissent and social concern added. T-shirts now available in candy pink and blue, with your choice of slogans like: mEat vegetarians, school is teh suk and anarchy is teh pwn.

Sorry, I get taken away sometimes...

I watch too much tv.

Ciao.

I'm too eclectic to be classified... I do like fusion a lot, but most of what I seem to come up with is blues based jazzy sounding stuff. But then I also like to shred and do ethereal stuff that really has no tone center. Argh!! What am I ?!?

Wherever intelligent rhythm guitar can be found, that's where I like to place myself.  That covers a lot of ground, the brunt of which might be described as R&B/soul/blues/funk, but solid "major-chord-rock" of the Tom Petty, Neil Young, or Paul Westerberg variety (i.e., there's an open G, D or A in there somewhere) holds a certain attraction, as does simpler fusion-jazz, swing, and alt-country.  Again, anything where planning out both chords and licks fleshes it out.  I always wanted to be either Jimmy Nolen or Steve Cropper., with a side-helping of George Harrison
