Title: My Power Supply reads 9.55 volts......

I just built a 9 volts Power supply from general guitar gadgets.
I'm getting a reading of 9.55 volts.

Is it safe to power my effects with that extra .55v?

How can I cut it down to just 9 volts?

If you used 10v caps, that would be right near the 'line'.
 You should be fine, most WW's I measured voltage from measured more than that.

9.55 volts is just fine for powering your 9V devices, but if you want to drop that extra 1/2 volt off, just put a diode in line with the output. A 1N4001 usually has a forward voltage of just a hair over 1/2 volt.

Most wall-warts don't even get that close to 9.0 volts.  Batteries can sometimes read 9.6 V when fresh.

Anyway, I power all of my pedals from a 12V power supply that actually outputs 14 V for the low current application.  I don't recommend doing this to your 9V pedals if you don't know your stuff well, but most pedals use components and circuits that could handle 30V without frying anything.  I usually see 50V Power supply caps in my pedals, and opamps that have an absolute max at +/- 18V, or 36 V from a single supply, which is safe at 30V.
