Haven't tried it myself (waiting on parts to build one actually) but I've heard the BrassMaster (schematic available at generalguitargadgets.com) handles bass frequencies very well...

6-string? What's that, a low B and a low G? or does it have a high G?

Low B and high C
I play 5-string, and was having trouble finding anything that would go low enough.....so I developed my own. I wanted something that would sound similar to an overdriven tube amp, so I hooked up two stages worth of Don Tilman's jfet preamp, with a volume pot between the two stages, and a Big Muff style tone control and volume pot at the output. It works as is, and I have used it onstage, but it will probably go through more development to get it exactly where I want it.

I rarely tune lower than drop-C, but with that in mind I will vouch for the brassmaster for more classic fuzz soiunds (it has a clean blaend that helps provide a cleaner low end).

A friend of mine who drop tunes to B now uses a bass thru/Bass paralooper with some other  over drive, and it sounds good as well.  The Bass Paralooper is at

A simularly functioning  circuit is at runoff groove.  I haven't tried it but it looks cool....

The last two project I mentioned aren't distortion units in and of themselves, but would allow you to use guitar OD's with a better results for bass.
