Title: Boss reverse-polarity protection
Post by: LH on April 29, 2004, 02:12:30 PM
If I'm not mistaken, Boss pedals use a "reversed" diode in parallel with the effect (or something like that) for reverse-polarity protection. I'm thinking that if I only use "standard" adapters like the Boss PSA adapter, Visual Sound One Spot, or Godlyke Power-All Switchmode, the Boss reverse-polarity protection should be adequate.

But still, I sometimes hear about someone with a "dead" Boss pedal and a fried diode. R.G. Keen's suggestion of using a "backwards" MOSFET sounds ideal, but I'm kind of hesitant about cutting up traces on the PCB, since I'm a newbie at working on pedals and I don't want to risk screwing up my pedal.

Thanks for any advice.

There are more advanced reverse polarity schemes, yes, but if you are a beginner and if your pedals and power supply are working OK now, don't worry about enhancing the protection in commercial pedals. Go hone your skills on building and modifying and when (or if) you ever have power polarity problems, address this then. You'll be much better able to handle it.
