Steve sends papers with the transistors that tell you what to look for.

I bild a three pin socket/perf with individual connection wires long enough to find the contacts for HFE way down in my meter.
Since I often trim my tranny's legs, having this HFE meter extension socket lets me use that feature on them, and on any transistors much more easily.
PNP...I just go to that side of the Hfe circle, where the E,B,C markings are, and poke em in there the way I think they aught to to...then  most of the time a 'normal' hfe reading comes to the meter screen.
EVery time I've pulled the CBE leads from their marked pins on the DMM, and matched the CBE"s to the pins in the circtuit that match the connections as stated in the schematic...I get amplification or better drive impedance, etc., and usually can get the Q biased fairly easily.,
