Now - someone ought to come up with the ultimate compressor from this lot!
It's cool that they post the schems, but I wouldn't get TOO excited - if you've ever heard a Symetrix compressor, they are decent but not great.
If you want a great compressor - find a schematic for an Empirical Labs Distressor - or just go for the classics - LA2A or 1176.
Currently - my main comp is a Klark Teknik DN500, which works very well - though doesn't have a particular 'sound' to it.. fairly transparent. Likely going to add an Avalon to my rig soon.

I have the schematic for that somewhere, I seem to remember that it doesn't have part values which I got from the company in England. I gather that the API 2500 is the best thing since sliced bread! It has a "Thrust Filter" before the detector. Now that sounds familiar, the What Compressor has a filter before the detector and I don't think that costs $2000+!

The English company Drawmer has put out some good compressors like the DL251, but the circuit is very difficult to dead in the service manual.
I'd love to hear from somebody who built the 'what' compressor to see how it really sounds.
You don't have to go crazy with compressors to get good sound - even buying them - the RNC is pretty great, for about 300 bucks (or less).. and even the distressor is only about 1200 bucks.
Yes, the API stuff is great - all of those components that are derived from great consoles are... API, Neve, SSL, Trident, etc...
If I could just get one of each....

RNC for $175 http://www.humbuckermusic.com/1001.html very nice but transparent. The Distressor is amazing. I'd love a schematic for one of those things.
