Title: Ring Modulators
Post by: jrc4558 on May 22, 2004, 01:41:10 PM
Hey everybody!
I wanted to ask all of you to recommend me a good DIY Ring Modulator.
I already built the one designed by Craig Anderton and now am looking for something other than that, something more complicated possibly.

So thank you! Any input is appreciated. :)

I have a few you could try at http://www.experimentalistsanonymous.com/diy/Schematics/ .  They're all over.  None of those have good layouts, though, sorry.

Yeah, that's the thread. Looks like Dan's V2 scheme is still there, too (near the end of the thread). Don't know if anyone has built one yet, tho.

Constantin and Charlie- What are your thoughts on the EPFM Ring Mod?

Also, I've got most of the parts to build one up, but had a question or two about part substitutions. I don't have a .05uf cap, so should I use a .047, or a .047 paralleled with a .0022? Does it matter that much? The same goes for the 50uf cap. Can I just use a 47uf, or should I use a 47uf paralleled with a 2.2uf? Thanks for the help.

Charlie, I was drawing a layout with photoshop as usual but I never had time to finish it. It seems that too much working and studying is overwelming my mind...
I soon forgot to finish it because I havo so many projects I'm working on. I'll post the PCB as soon as I'll finish it, with all the mods I can find.
And all the people should wait...

By the time check the balanced modulator by Paia. Chips should be available somewhere.

About parts substtitution, I think that you can put a 47uF cap instead of the 50uF with no difference. Remember that all these components have bigger or smaller tolerance! I don't think that these small variations on parts value make a great difference.
But maybe I'm wrong...

i built the epfm's ring mod and it's pretty much unusable... it has so much carrier noise in the circuit that you need a gate or something to get it to sound ok... but by that time you could find a better one out there... just my op....

Did you set the trimpot properly?  I know there was supposed to be one in there.  All ring mods need a lot of trim-tweaking.
