What do you guys think of this DC Jack? It's isolated, and inserts from the inside, so you can solder it into the circuit before it's in the box. And no desoldering just to remove the circuit. It's the Kobiconn 163-4302.
There's been a lot of discussion of these in the past. When they're NOT in an enclosure, they're isolated, because there's a little tab the fits into a space in the body of the jack. You can almost see what I'm talking about in the lower left-hand pic on the data sheet. The problem with these is, that little tab can push the plug against the inside wall of the connector, which is in contact with the enclosure when the jack is mounted. If the enclosure is metal, then the jack's outer metal body is in continuity with the enclosure. If you wire the DC plugs center negative, then you've just connected DC positive to the shell of the DC jack, which is connected to the metal enclosure, which is connected to ground of your audio connectors, which are connected to DC ground. So, these jacks can easily short out your power. I bought a few when I first found them, and was disappointed with the actual lack of isolation.
Thanks, you confirmed what I feared. On the side view you mentioned, I can see part of the tab protruding into the threaded area. It is listed as isolated, and is plastic, so I was hoping someone would tell me it was ok.
Thanks for your input. :D
The part of the body that would be inside the enclosure is plastic, but the threaded part is actually metal. If you want, I can post a pic of one for you.
Smallbear sells it also. I've used them. They work if you drill a 1/2" hole and install a rubber bushing(w/ 3/8" inside dia.) to stick it through. Here's a pic:

Sure, I'd love to see a pic of it, if you don't mind. I was hoping to escape reality on this one, but no such luck  . I almost ordered 1000 (recieved a quote) of the SCD-522 jacks, but held back, waiting on someone else to get a quote also. My bad on that one. I still may order them, as I hate the present dc jacks we all use (having to be soldered after installation). I think I could easily get rid of what I don't need.
Edit: here's the original thread about the SCD-522

163-4302- i just bought these a while back--same as the plactic ones from Smallbear. There Grrrrrreat! these are not metal ones. 1.38$
RDV...I'm familiar with that jack! I'm a dumbass!! I wasted all that time checking, hoping this was useable, and it's the same one Smallbear sells!! lol!! Nope...not into washers or bondo.

If you do order a 1000 lot, I'm in for a bunch of them. I've got stuff for trade(.22uF, .47uF, .68uF, & 1uF caps, all metal film & 470k resistors) if you'd like, or if not, I'd pay cash.

According to the quote, they're manufactured to order...10-13 weeks delivery time, FOB Taiwan.
Not a big deal in the larger scheme of life, but I get totally tipped-over every time I have to install dc jacks first, and then solder them. And the opposite, desoldering them if I want to remove the ckt from the box for refinishing or whatever. I may just order these the next time I box a pedal!
Thanks to Sound Tech & RDV....glad you guys checked my post before I ordered these. Sometimes I'm guilty of ordering late at nite, when the ole' brain is toast.
I've gone through the same thing, squinting at the damn Mouser PDF catalog. I've looked & looked, but I guess that no-one sells the SCD-522 online. PM me if you do order, cause I'm in.

No problem  The only thing I can see someone having an issue about the SCD-522, is how much it protrudes from the box. There's a pic of Wizard's box in the link on the jacks. Not a big problem, because most every hardware store sells plastic washers that you could put on the inside to space the jack inward. And it would still protrude less inside the box than the standard type does.
For me, that's not a problem. The option of removing it w/out unsoldering would far outweigh a little protrusion. Having more room inside is an added bonus.

I'm just running into this problem while trying to add a power jack to a '74 Phase 90. The power jack was constantly shorting out. Thanks for the information, now I know that the problem is with the jack and not my inexperience in soldering and wiring.
So what jack should I use instead? What is the normal jack of choice. I ordered this one from Smallbear thinking that's what everyone did and I wouldn't have any problems.

Steve has two different type DC jacks on his site, the one you bought, and this one: http://www.smallbearelec.com/Ordering/DCjack.jpg
Personally, I like to use that one. The body is all plastic. No metal contacting the enclosure.
been waiting for weeks now for a reply from Taiwan, concerning a large
order: they seem not to want to sell their stuff to a non-distributor....
You did use your company name didn't you Ton?
RDV
sure!
Princeton doesn`t reply either...
(maybe I should ask the price for 100000+ units?)
The chinese BBD factory on the contrary is most eager!
(As are many others...)
What the hell! Tell them you're with E.H.! You sort of are.

They didn't even give you a quote?
both mentioned never replied at all...
I guess it's up to me then.
