Title: OT - Songs that make you cringe
Post by: Alex C on May 29, 2004, 09:29:00 PM
I was thinking today, what are some songs or parts of songs that are "accepted" or "popular" that just make you cringe?  My example is the flute or recorder "solo" in "Wild Thing" by the Troggs.  It makes me crazy to hear it, I seriously have to cover my ears.  And this may be blasphemy, but several minutes into the "piano" section of "Layla," the guitar noodling gets more than a little tiresome, and some of the bends aren't...quite...on...pitch- it's like nails on a chalkboard to me.  What makes you guys crazy?  :)

Any current pop music.
And the Nu-Metal where the guy isn't so much singing but barking and growling, though I like a lot of the Nu-Metal.
But then...I'm a Dinosaur. :?

Alannis Morissette. Partic. Jagged Little Pill. I know it "rules" that the album was recorded on cheap, minimal gear, but I have never heard a clearer endorsement of an autotuner than that recording. Being off because you were really laying into something is great, but that record is a goddamn clambake. Yeesh.

yeah what RDV said!  Only I'm not a dinasour.  Then I grew up in the sticks of Alabama.  I either listened to country or what my Pa was listening to which was zep, cream, Allman, Skynyrd, well you get the point.  Thank God I never heard a Culture Club song till a couple of years ago on a commercial.

THAT makes me cringe...I "Love' to see a pathetic person try to turn my memories [and hopes for COOL film footage and commentary of a specified era that is to be 'loved'] of that era into a taboo, ka-ka, and sad time, by shedding their pathetically dark view of style or genre of music, with a lifp, stating comments like "Sheeesss, what were they thinking?'
Anything more than one decade ago, on the MTV, and VH1 is depicted as bad bad...I don't get it, and THAT drives ME Nuts !!!
That said, when they conceptuallized this show, and decided to portray decade-era's in an almost sadistically pathetic way..."What the hey were they THINKING???" SHeeeezszzssszsss

ARRRRRRGGGG All this Crappy "punk" (avril lavigne crap) makes me want to throw some clapton and hendrix cd's at them and tell them to learn to play properly (the crazy hobos, "look at me, I can play three chords on MY $8000 guitar") Ah, just had to get that of my back.

i saw her on SNL once..... talk about a need for singing lessons....  She was so off the whole song.  Even worse, she just stood their while she sang.... didnt move a bit.... one hand by her side, one on the mic stand.  The band was actually ok.

Popular music in general:
- post 90's can't list to most of it
- 80's very few good tracks
- 70 some great tracks interwoven with a lot of stuff that makes me cringe severly (often the two exteremes by the same artist on the same album).

Crappy or woosy bridges or choruses, Cliche solos, in the middle of otherwise great songs- why put one in at all!

A lot of the singing on jazz/fusion tracks (especially early 70's) - kick arse playing then next minute some weird lalalala......

Quoteanything off of SRV's soul to soul album.

Hmmm, yeah that's not a good one...

Quote"Feelings"

and that one particularly....why is it so popular.......

"Long Haired Lover from Liverpool" by Jimmy Osmond.  My hands reach for my face whenever I hear it.

http://www.lyricsxp.com/lyrics/l/long_haired_lover_from_liverpool_little_jimmy_osmo.html

PS The solo on Wild Thing is an ocarina, which is a nice instrument...not exactly 'wild' so it was a little inappropriate, but it does sound nice in the right setting...

Celine Dion...

(I know, I'm a Canadian, but...)

Anything that is off-key.

Any song where the singer thinks he can play guitar with his/her voice, and keeps trying to be louder than the guitar player itself in his solo...

There are so many songs that make me cringe, some because they're just so bad, but most just because they're so overplayed that, just like the balogna sandwich I had everyday for three years, I don't care if I ever come in contact with them again.

That said, one recent thing that makes me cringe is anything off of the new Chili Peppers record that I hear on modern rock radio. I'll be an armchair producer here, but that's because that's what I do for a living.... Who told Anthony to sing? Who said, "hey buddy, okay, you've rapped enough. Let's start trying to sing a melody. Have you heard of melodies, Anthony?"

So this new record is SO completely over-autotuned that I can't even hear it. "By The Way" is just ridiculous. It's like "The Red Hot Chili Peppers featuring Robbie the Robot!"

Also, as the biggest Beach Boys fan that I know, I cringe when I hear "Kokomo".

"September 1963 (Oh What a Night)" drives me nuts too.

Anything by Journey :!:  :!:  :!:
An incredible waste of Neal Schon's guitar playing.
Great musician's in a band with a singer that makes you projectile vomit every time he opens his mouth.

There was this country song...I can't remember it's name. A classic example of how years later, the same words or phrases of a song can have a whole new meaning or connotation.  When it first came out, it was just June-Moon-Spoon surupy. When I reached my teens and heard it, I used to cringe. It was an acoustic song where the singer was talking about fond memories and things he liked.

He started every line off with, "I like.........."
Then he hits this line, "I like....little baby boys"

No doubt, at the time, he meant something harmless, like the joys of fatherhood or something. But now, it just doesn't cut it. Does anyone remember that song?

If someone calls Avril Lavigne punk again, I'm taking it personnally  8) Nowhere near anything even the slightest shade of punkrock she is. I'm gonna resist going on a rant about so-called "punk" music that's basically another trend like the coming back of bell-bottoms. I mean those were cool. Were.

I have a pretty wide taste in music *cough* but it just so happens that most everything that hits the top10 (if not 50) is crap (read: Candy-pop song about "girlpower", hiphop songs about "bitches" and "mo'e-ney", and so-called "alternative" that's really not when you think about it..)  pushed by big record companies just to make some more cash while they look for the next big thing (that will bring in more cash) *cough* but most of country music makes me cringe and shiver (then again, I'm not a cowboy), I still like some folk stuff tho. And I'll be the first to praise screaming as an emotional enrichment (just like overdrive/distortion) to a song, but like RDV said, those nu-metal bands singer should consider that too much is like not enough. Some of them have really good songs but the singer sounds like they aren't singing so much as doing a very good impersonation of white-noise. *cough*If I want that, I'll switch my tv to a channel I don't get.*cough*

Well, I tried.

Ciao :D

Oh man! That's a great tune! I work in an enviroment where we have a radio set to a "Lowest Common Denominator" type station on, ands it's always interesting to see what makes other people cringe.  "I just don't know what to do with myself" by the White Stripes seems to annoy people. I like it OK when I don't hear it seventeen times a day. About a thousand years ago I used to work in a mall that had the soundtrack to "Annie" on continous loop. Forget cringe, how about homicidal rage? I suppose if I were forced to listen to Celine Dion or Boy Bands a lot they would make me cringe. But if a Celine Dion song comes on in the supermarket or something, I just laugh. Time heals all wounds they say, and I can now at least endure a lot of music that used induce seizures when it was current and in heavy rotation. Not sure what would happen if I were exposed to "Memories" from Cats though. Might swallow my tongue or maybe just die laughing.

Anything I have heard 5000 times.

I used to work with these guys that listened to "the classic rock station". I heard the same songs about 3 to 4 times a day. It gets old real fast, but they never seemed to get tired of hearing the same freaking song over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over... Ok, I'm sure you get the point.

I can't for the life of me figure out the logic behind these "Classic Rock" stations that all play the same 150 or so songs. With thousands & thousands to choose from, they play those same songs. No way in the world should you hear the same song twice within 8 hours on a "Classic Rock" station, but you do. It's sickening.

I hate everything on the radio.  I, too, became sick of the same old classic rock reruns to the point where i would only listen to the oldies station.  We used to have a great oldies station here in Cleveland until Clear Channel corrupted it and put all kinds of horrible 70's disco and BILLY JOEL on it, and renamed it "the most fun music of the 60's and 70's".  Gone are the great old 50's tunes except for a small nationally syndicated show on their sunday night dead air.  I hate radio so much i could scream.

If i'm caught listening to the radio anymore, it's NPR, or the local metal show on sunday nights, mostly trying to stomach the horrible local nu-metal in the hopes of requesting my band...

Anyone tried XM or other satellite radio?

Move to Boston! I worship my radio! Not commercial radio of course, but the wealth of college stations here is staggering. MIT, Harvard, Emerson, Boston College and Tufts all have great programming. Also a great local music scene. Check the streaming media from:

I hate radio, too. Too many commercials, etc.
I do listen to the local college station that plays jazz all day without all the BS, though. But mostly I listen to CDs, fusion and jazz- most of this stuff you'll never hear on any radio station, though. As a matter of fact, almost everything I have ever really liked and listened to were also things that you would never hear on the radio... that includes a lot of different types of music.

... it's part of a careful and deliberate plan - didn't Frank Zappa say something about keeping people stupid ?!

May I suggest effective anti-dotes for being exposed to the following:

Celine Dionne ... go listen to Jenny Hanh and Babe Ruth
Boy Bands ... go listen to Ted Nugent's "Call of the Wild" ...
AC/DC - Steve Miller ... go listen to Edgar Varese's "Ameriques" ... ah, fresh air !

I now very well understand why Keith Moon threw TV's out hotel windows - I personally can't work where's there's a ^%$%^@ radio blaring out that shit - I mean my hammer or nail puller could always turn into a weapon real fast ... the other guys usually understand this and they'll put on a classical station when they notice I've taken on a crazed look and I start pacing all over the place randomly ...  can't help it, if I hear "Back in Black" come on I'll suddenly stand straight up like a bear who's just heard a twig break nearby ... usually someone will run and grab the radio before it's too late ...

There's still a few good DJ's around, even some great ones.
We used to get Akron and Cleveland stations that we're really cool.
WMMS ...used to be super ground breaker with stoned DJ'x playing Hendrix, Trower..actually quuite a wide variety of rock, folk rock etc. and had quite the influence around here, a staple was the Buzzard Emblem...basically if you liked the Buzzard you we're cool.
There are two stations I can listen to and find interesting new stuff, besides those two, the rest is commercialized beyond belief, like the singer that's claims  to be Bluer than Blue, so I listen to classical...listening for the fantastically interesting movements that sometimes occur, like any other genre there's the truly inspired work of a master player or near novice, and the stuff that sounds like a re-arranged music lesson book or two.

I can't quite remember what they sound like, but I do remember listening to the album with their version of King Kong quite a bit back in the mid 70's. That was back in the day I would buy any album with Roger Dean art on the cover. That's how I ended up with assorted Uriah Heep and Budgie albums.
