Title: 3 pedals, an amp,"designing" and a cat
Post by: csj on June 14, 2004, 02:57:52 AM
These pedals are going out to a relatively famous player in Boston. So is the amp...eventually - since I can only really put in about a day a week building it takes me forever to finish the larger projects.

Humor me on the "CS Jones Effects" thing guys. There is no such thing. It was a box which I had originally made for myself but the guy really liked the looks of the doll so I used it because I've lost the original template that I made it with so this was the best I could do.

So... how have I come in contact anyone "relatively famous"? I really don't know. It's funny how things work out sometimes. When I got an email from this guy I was stunned actually. And what am I getting for them...all of them? Not a thing. I wanted to build it for him because I love his playing so much and his name brand pedals had crapped out on him. I didn't "design" any of this stuff anyway.  If I took any money from him I'd probably feel obligated to kick back most of that to this site, AMZ and GEO for as much as I've taken from them. IMHO taking someone else's work and changing a few caps/pots/resistors doesn't make it my new design any more than freshening up a decrepit '68 Pro Reverb with new caps, a couple resistor tweaks, a new (and "different") OT and a 3 prong mains cord makes that '68 design mine. I feel the same about loading up someone elses circuit in a software simulator and "easter-egging" parts values with the single intent of "creating" something "new". That's not designing AFAIC.

There was a thread earlier this month about what's it take to become good at designing pedals (or something like that) and several of the answers surprised me...something along the lines of "the only rule is that there are no rules" and I thought, seriously, "WTF? No rules? Are you joking?" There are rules...oh, brother there are rules. A serious crap load of rules. A thousand times a thousand rules. It's taken hundreds if not thousands of years to fathom and harness the powers of these unseen forces and guys in the here and now have taken decades out of their own lives to get a working knowledge of how to apply the rules. Yeah man... there are alot of rules. Without knowing the rules and pretending you're a "designer" you might one day find yourself in the humilating position of having to explain how you're going to provide the 1250 volts your pedal "design" needs for it's power supply.
Or you might one day have somebody look into the guts of "your" design and say..."hey dewd... your 'world's greatest overdrive' is nothing but a tubescreamer". If you don't truly know the designing rules then that's when the mischief starts...the "yes, to the untrained eye maybe - but you see, I only solder after midnight when the electrons are at rest".

If you think you're a "designer" check out the thread on the "dying battery". Step in the ring with 2 true designing heavyweights and give it a shot. Forget the rules...wing it, go with the flow. Get floored.

So what's this got to do with the pedals I've built.
Well I just build 'em.
I perf 'em so I'm not stealing artwork.
That's it...
I don't design 'em.

And why the cat?
She's just special to me.
She couldn't give a damn about any of this.

With work like that, you have no reason to quit!  Besides, your cat needs an obstacle course to climb over...

Just curious, is there an "A" in this guitar player's name?

Cool boxes. And cool cat. I love cats, but I don't have one, cause I live in a flat.

Cool artwork, and I rather liked the rant, too--very "human" (as opposed to feline, I suppose...)  What are they?  And I, like Roger, am wondering about whether said Famous Guitarist from Boston has an "A" in his name?    Not really a "pedal guy", if so, but, then again, I don't know what's in the pedals.

Very cool artwork, and a nice I-don't-give-a-f*ck-what-the-feeding-unit-is-doing type cat to boot.
Mine's exactly the same. If a soldering iron wasn't as hot as it is, she'd go to sleep on one. That being *exactly* the one I wanted to use that day.
I actually had to cut a 4.63kOhm resisor (you'll notice this is not an every-day value) out of her fur once. Hey, I needed that resistor. She didn't quite agree.

The cat's name is Mena. She's the sweetest cat I've ever seen. I used to hate cats until she came around. She was a stray that adopted me for some reason. About 4 years ago, out of nowhere, she showed up in my driveway. She was really just a large post-kitten at that time. She'd keep trying to get into the house but I wouldn't let her. About a week into this it rained and rained and rained. I didn't see her for two days. On the third night at about midnight I was sitting by my computer and at the back door I could hear her little pathetic meow. I had grown quite worried about her and I slid that back door open and snatched her little wet body up and I said..."ok, then...you're mine". I thought she was a boy so I named her Herman. When I got her to the vet I found out she was a girl so I changed her name to Mena. She hasn't been out of eyeshot from my house since. I cut a little access door out of the main door and she goes in and out at will...mostly in. And yes, she is a mouser. She's got a thing for bunnies too. I've had to pull many a bunny away from her and let it go - back into the woods. Birds too. Oh, and bugs. She eats alot of bugs for some reason.
That's so funny about the resistor Mike...I have had exactly that same thing happen with her. So much for  the idea that this hobby gets easier to get done when the kids leave. The darn cat then decides to make your workbench her den.

The pedals are nothing special. Different voiced ODs and a trem.
Just the basics.

Man, I can't really say who the player is...not trying to be coy or anything like that guys. It just doesn't seem like it would be right for me to use the guy's name. This should have occured to me but I honestly didn't even think about it. Really though, he hasn't even heard them yet...I just mailed them out this afternoon. I feel pretty confident that with my luck by the time he gets them something will have gone wrong, they'll sound like sh*t, he'll hastily return them and I'll go back to clearing cat hair away from my workstation.

Crappy day, crappy things goin on ... but THAT post has really cheered me up for some strange reason ... maybe coz I like cats anyway ... thanks

And the guitarist's name isnt important ... I hope he's happy with the fx. If they sound as good as they look he should be. I really have to put more effort into my stompers
