Post by: Fernando Aguirre on June 21, 2004, 06:46:20 PM
Hi,

I want to build the bsiab II and i found i only have two 2n5457 and i need three of them. I can´t find them in here so i need an alternative.
Can i use 2n5089 instead? or j201?
thanks

The 2N5089 is a NPN bipolar junction tranny. It can never be a sub.

Look at the DIY FAQ. There is a list of possible subs for J201 which include 2N5457. Take into consideration that by subbing FETs, you may be dealing with slight to extreme differences. Check with the gurus here for proper guidance.

You can sub a J201 in a variety of ways. You can stick it in the top part of the first gain stage, it'd probably sound best there, or you can put it in the last fet stage, it'd give more distortion and compression, but not sound quite so clear. I picked the 2N5457s in several places for their clarity, more so than gain, because the third gain stage makes up for the loss in gain.

Sorry to hi-jack yet another thread, but,
Ed: does the tone control eat up much gain, or is there plenty to not have to worry about a recovery stage afterward?

Thanks in advance

It's got plenty of gain, it can definitely boost.
