Title: What is the best DIY Chorus?
Post by: ESPm2M on August 29, 2004, 04:11:09 PM
The Zombie Chorus? I heard that people had problems with these, namely a clicking with the LFO.  I also heard there was a work around for this.

Anyway, so what is the best?

I've built two clones of the Small Clone from Tonepad and I'm extremely pleased with them. Be warned, though, it's not an over-the-top effect, but I think it sounds fantastic. I'm planning to do the delay time mod listed in the build reports, which may give it a bit more versatility....In any case, I recommend it.

I built the zombie and never had the 'ticking' problem. Others had but Mark did some improvements to the circuit. He added a seperate bias networt to serve the LFO which - at least I think so - prevents ticking.
Anyway it its quite easy to build and sounds fantastic - I love it! Check out the ringmodulator-mod posted on munkys homepage

Does anyone know of any mods that can be done to the EH commercial pedal like the Diy one?

The mods posted in regard to the Tonepad layout are really very straightforward. I think the Depth pot mod is basically replacing a couple resistors and a switch with a pot. IIRC the delay time mod is also very straightforward, so as long as the TonePad schematic is close to the original (I can't remember if it is a work-alike or a direct copy) then those mods should be easy to pull off.

sure they can, If you got a real DIY EH pedal(if the circuit is realatively close( things like opamp changes may not all work on different versions, but small things like decreasing/increasing range, more/less bass, etc... will work(thought some may require a bit of work if you have a different version)) Only chorus to avoid (if not very confident) is the Neo/Univibe one.

great thanks for the feedback.  I think  might go ahead and build the Zombie after I finish my stage center reverb (ggg) and Univibe (ggg). Of course that will not be for a while so if someone has had good experiences with other DIY designs, please let me know so that I can continue to compare them .

thanks
