Title: General 9V Battery Question
Post by: Paul Marossy on September 20, 2004, 01:05:00 PM
I'm not sure if that has been answered before, but how many mA hours does a typical 9V alkaline battery have before it gives up the ghost (or at least becomes unuseable in aguitar effect)?

500-600mAh depending on brand, but that figure is typically rated down to 1.2V, so figure approx. 300mAh down to 8V.

BTW it depends on the load and current draw as well.  Check the Duracell datasheet for a 9V for a better idea:

Gee, I didn't know that they had data sheets for 9V batteries...
So, if I have a circuit that draws 1.5mA, my battery should last quite a while! And that also means that my Ibanez digital delay must be quite a lot higher on the current draw - I think it only lasted about 8-10 hours...

Thanks.

Paul,

It must be something with delays. My Dan Echo eats batteries. I get about the same amount of use before I have to change batteries - time to build a power supply.

Digital FX draw significantly more current than most analog FX, that's why battery time sucks with them.  The Digitech X-Series pedals are rated for 4 HOURS on a 9V.

Yupp, I think they all Chow Batteries.
The marketing dept. decided commercial effects must ALL have battery clips, even though I doubt I could even get through a gig with only one battery running my RV3 or Power Chorus.
Dan Electro 'Cool Cat' is a good example, it houses two 9v that last not very long...power supply is a MUST for pedals like these.

My Arion SAD-1, an analog delay, also eats batteries in like 6 hours or so...
