Title: hotbox/fat distortion unit
Post by: Parko on December 13, 2004, 12:17:21 AM
I've been looking at building a matchless hotbox (since i gave up the idea of building a V-twin), and being a beginner at the game (built a few fuzz faces/tonebenders) i'm wondering if anyone can help me out with finding a suitable replacement transformer(s) to run the thing on australian power (240V).

Here's the schematic i've been working from: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/diagrams/hotboxsc.gif

Also, i've been having a look at a few other schematics of the hotbox, and the one difference is the lamps. What is the purpose of the lamps? And are those 2 devices in parallel with them the valve heaters?

My next question is, are there any other great sounding distortion/overdrive projects out there that will give fat "Orange" kind of sound, rather than shrill high end distortion. Something a little bit chunky and not so fizzy. I'd like to keep away from the fuzz type circuit if at all possible.

Thanks alot for your time!

Simply use a Hammond 369EX  (http://www.hammondmfg.com/300series.htm)universal primary transformer - you can get one from Electronic Valve and Tube Co. (http://www.evatco.com.au/) in Victoria, and I'm sure there are other sources in Australia.  :D

The "lamps" appear to be pilot lights - and, yes, those are the heaters in parallel with them.

Can't help you with the Orange sound,  never played one - sorry!
