This past week/weekend I purchased one of those ColdHeat soldering irons. What better way to test than some DIY fun. I had the parts to modify my used Boss SD-1 so I did it (using a info from indyguitarist for fullclone mod - just wanted to see how well the interesting idea goes.)
Everything worked fine. I'm used to having a super hot soldering iron on at all times, constant tip cleaning, and using just a touch of solder to help the transfer of heat, etc. ColdHeat is delicate in comparison. It works. Just not for me I suppose. (ended up getting a refund to get a cheap 15/30W iron from radioshack) and it sounded like a good idea...
Erm... Oh yes, the Killswitch effect. I don't know my own strength. I actually pulled some joints right off the pcb - lifting the pad(?) with it. I just soldered the connection firm - i got continuity.
So it works. I close it back up. It doesn't work - so i slowly unscrew one screw - and it works. After some playing around (testing) - it seems to cut the signal when pressure is applied to the back cover. Viola - killswitch. I had fun just tapping away - doing Bends-era variable tremolos. Some stuttered solos. Rad.
I know it's not Perfect. but I like this mistake. :D
hi. i just joined this site. i am for sure a newby. im here to learn how to build (or buy) a trem pedal that only engages when the stomp is held down (no click). and i want it to completely kill the signal and turn it back on... like a fast stutter effect. The only knob would need to control the speed. The depth should remain as high as possible at all times. do you know where i can find something like this? or what direction i could go to do so.
thanks,
mat
