Title: JCM800 Veroboard/Stripboard?
Post by: KerryF on July 14, 2006, 07:15:13 PM
Anyone know of a stripboard/veroboard layout for the JCM800 pedal?  I would like to build it, but a veroboard layout would make it much easier for me.

I have a working one, but "without" a drawn up layout as yet, it's a LOT of work to do
this one, due to the 7/9 opamps ( can't remember how many ) that's many hours of my own
"personal" time .

Having just posted an "Ausin Gold" overdrive layout, which has 159 views and just ONE comment
I'm tempted not to bother with anymore layouts .... for some time !!

Hey Marty,

Don't do that please. I'm one of the ones to enjoy your layouts and dragonfly's. I don't build all of them and certainly the Austin Gold wasn't one of the planned ones. I myself have posted a few veros . Either because they were not correct from scratch or whatever reason I've had just a few comments , but if I count on how many circuits I've built from your vero layouts, I see it as my very small contribution.

Don't be upset please and keep on offering those great layouts. I agree some more comments would be great though :icon_evil:

I'm not expecting a ton of "pats on the back" and "well done chap" - though some are welcome,
I like to hear if people will build it and also comments about improvements, or "move this trace here" etc
for a better layout ... blah ,,, blah ..

we'll see ..

I dont have a schematic for that one (got a link ?), but have you ever thought of doing your own ?

Did you mean the LXH2 preamp (http://home3.netcarrier.com/~lxh2/marsh.html) or the JCM800 emu (http://diy.erikhansen.net/schematics/misc/2203-RevB.png)? If you meant the latter, I could give it a try.

I'm pretty sure he means the LXH2 .... that's the one that I built on vero !

I mean the JCM800 emulator.  The second one I think.  I dont relaly understand the difference but I think its the second one.

There's no vero layout for the JCM800 Emulation that I know of yet.  Whoever does tackle doing it, use Electrictab's schematic since that one is verified and solid.  http://diy.erikhansen.net/schematics/misc/jcm800.png

I'd also like a copy to host if that's ok with whoever does it.  Credit will be given as always.

I will attempt to do a perf layout later this week.

A perf layout would be great too.  The perfect starting point is the ROG Thunderchief.  Most of the work is already done, just change a few values and add two more JFETs.  ;)  I would have done that one but time is precious these days.  Heck, I barely have time to do any DIYing these days.  It's been months since I built anything.  :(

I don't want this to come off the wrong way but this sound very demanding. Maybe you should try doing one yourself.  Bancika made a terrific program for making your own layouts and the best way to understand the effect your making is to lay it out yourself.  I'm all for sharing layouts but ultimatly making your own is very satisfying.

I'll have a go at a vero layout, looks like a challenge. Couple of questions first though
I take it J201s have a GSD pinout?
How much room do trimmers normally take up on a vero layout? I don't tend to use them so I've never tried fitting them into a layout.

Sorry guys if I sounded rude.  I didnt mean it to come off like that.  So yea if anyone wants too, it would be nice.  I dont want someone though to spend hours on it.  Thanks.  ;D .

That's cool.  If it's based off the Electrictabs schematic, which it looks like it is, then the "design by" needs to reflect that, not me.  ;)

Looks great, you just need to link "a" to "j" for a constant ground ... "b" is 9v right !

Hey, this is what I call a progression. Just omission errors this time.

Yes b is 9v.

Zombie chorus here I go

Is that a perf layout or a vero layout ?

It looks like a hybrid to me and is hard to follow. Also you need to look at component physical sizes and how much space youve given them (eg 680nF is a BIG cap).

Actually it's a perf layout. I've tried to make it as compact as possible. I'm starting to build it, and yes it's kind of challenging cramming all those components in the board.

I would really like to see how you would have done it, your layouts are very clean and well organized. Seeing the differences would be of big help to me.

Hi Torchy!! :)

I use .68uF panasonic caps from digikey -- they are very small and work great in tight places. Just an FYI. :)

Talk to you later,
Brian

I should add a bit... 1800kiss my...with all due respect...this is a DIY place. We'll all help YOU do it yourself, but you really should dive in and try vero'ing it yourself. You'll learn ALOT more. I say this because looking at your previous posts you have asked several times if someone will send you a vero layout. Since there isn't one, can you contribute one? We could get it in the Layouts gallery so everyone could benefit.  :icon_wink:

Also, you might consider a different screen name... it might come off in a abrasive way to some.  :icon_biggrin:

I actually did give it a try, from the perfboard layout Xavier posted.  I did a little bit and then realized I didnt have it big enough and had to move everything so I stopped.  I think I will give it a try, but right now I am working on my first design for an overdrive pedal so I am almost done with that before I test it on breadboard.

About the screen name, I think most people dont even recognize it for what it means, but I use it on UG forums, so if people are on here from there, they can recognize me.

Sorry if it offends anyone.  ;D

Xavier - thanks, it looked like perf but I wasnt sure  :icon_wink:

I have a Thunderchief layout I'll try and alter for this.

Brian - When I meant caps are big, I meant in respect to other components ie on perf/vero you can put two resistors on adjacent holes but I leave a gap for caps. I leave the gap so that if you have small caps you can squeeze the layout smaller, but it'll fit whatever you have in the spares box.

Oh, and I dont get offended by usernames - its what you say thats important  :icon_wink:

Yeah now I'm really curious. I first tried a vero layout but after 25 trace cuts I thought I wasn't taking the right approach. :icon_mrgreen:

Looking at it again I don't think it's so hard to follow, at least if you compare it to the Boogey layout I did before. This being said, that is a 10x26 layout. If it wasn't for the 6 pots needed, it would fit in a 1590B box, which I like.

Looking forward to yours, Torchy, and thanks for coming back !!!

Yea I started to transfer your layout into veroboard until there was a "cut trace" every other hole... ::)
