Title: prof. tweed build and doing some strange things
Post by: dschwartz on April 13, 2007, 11:21:35 PM
HI all there!!!
I finally build a prof tweed...i let it with an 0.01uf negative feedback cap. Used a j201 for the first stage as recommended and MPF´s for the rest...AND i added a 39nF bypass cap at the first stage....WHY??

Cause at the front of my amp (peavey triumph PAG120) it sounded as a totally farty, muddy and blatty..ugly overdrive, specially on the low notes, so i thought that cutting the bass ant the first stage will clean it up... ??? >:(

The thing is that i tried it with a Marshall jcm800 clone at a friend´s home (w/the BP cap) and it sounded freakin´good!!!!! nice breakup, totally fender-type sound, all i expected from this pedal, even more..great!!... ;D ;D ;D

so i brought it back home with high hopes, plugged it to my amp, and still sounded like crap :icon_frown: :icon_frown:, even with the bypass cap mentioned...

what´s going on folks??? please help!!! ??? ???

Hi dschwartz!

Ive built the Professor as well (2n5457 - MPF102 - 2N5457) and yes, after gain at 3/4 it realy sounds like a farting insect ... in lower gain settings i can get a very dynamic lite overdriven/clean sound depending in the Guitar/pickup.. Best with a TS5 or DS1 in front to get a very nice medium chrunch...But im sure, i didint do the soldering/wiring very good (it was my second ever built pedal) so there are some minor glithces in that box. And why dont u try it with all MPF102? It should be less farting for u though. And experiment with the Drain Bias (i once used it with all BF245A Fets and had to bias about 5.2 V to make it sound good....)

i played with the drain bias quite a bit, by ear, at first i thought that was the problem..but didn´t help..

i also tried mpf102, 2sk30, k113..with much less gain and the same farts on the low notes...

the thing is that ina the jcm800 it sounded SO GOOD..and in mine sounded like crap.. even through the power amp input...

maybe its an impedance problem..but seeing the schem i think it has a rather low impedance output...

do you think an output buffer will help?

The overdriven amp sound of the PT is not a knockout distortion pedal.  Although I don't remember experiencing the farting discussed here.  A Tube Screamer going into the PT sounds great IMHO.  Or try some other distortion pedals in front of it.  I know I was pleasantly surprised.  I used MPF102's in mine since the J201's didn't bias very well for me.  I'm not sure why.  One of the bias trims are very sensitive to the point of maybe super cluing it position after you get it set.  Still all in all even the PT by itself is fine IMO.
