QuoteI am verrrryyyy picky about my "grit" and Light O/D's and Boosters in particular so, I tend to be a tougher customer
when it comes to this type of circuit.
All around it performs quite well and despite what some have said here, I recommend the build with the tone control as
I found the tone of this unit to be on the harsh side, even with the treble rolled down some on the guitar.
Just like Mark , I'm very picky about this kind of sound.
So far the best thing I built is the Peppermill ; I like it a lot but the grit is still a bit harsh.
I want the tone to sound like Mike Campbell ,Tom Petty the crunched sound must die out very smoothly. Maybe I want too much from a transistor circuit but don“t want to give up hope yet.
Who can point me to a circuit which will deliver this sound .
Alf
Oh yes I forgot , I also want the crunch to start smoothly. It has too much of a creaking character from the start.
In the meantime I finished my Dr boogey .

You could check in my gallery "schematics" for the Golden Dragon Overdrive...its essentially a adapted minibooster (which is an adapted mu amp) that makes nice crunchy overdrive. Worth breadboarding. I believe theres also a sound sample there....
'Crunch' is such a subjective thing, so I'm not sure if following circuit is what you're after as it's a high-gainer:

The schematic is hosted by Marcos, so if you don't see it try again later (IIR bandwidth is sometimes an issue with his site).
Dragonfly ,
The Golden Dragon sounds rather good , what guitar and amp were used , do you know ?
I will build it because I want to know what it sounds like with even less overdrive.
Maybe I should try this one in a blender pedal. Must still try that, the blender I mean.
and Gerry ,
It's not the high but the low gain overdrive I'm after.
That's in my opinion the most difficult area to achieve a really good crunchy sound.
I'll have a look at the nutcruncher.
Thanks , Alf
