Title: 2.1mm or 2.5mm?
Post by: juse on February 02, 2008, 12:27:51 AM
I have been using  2.5mm jacks/warts, but was wondering if there is any advantage in using a 2.1mm instead? Is one more compatible with a majority of pedals already available, or is it just a matter of mfgs being able to sell more product? Am I looking at a Ford vs. Chevy type of scenario, where it is just preference, or is there a valid reason to use one over the other? They are equally priced, so it just seems like a coin-toss to me.

Thanks!

btw.... I'm new here & really love this place - my new home  ;D

As far as I know 2.1 mm are mory widely used in the guitar stompboxes (Boss and Ibanez for example) as well as for video cameras used for security purposes. I would like to recommend 2.1 mm.

yes, 2.1mm seems to be the standard for boss 9v DC, I've noticed quite a few pedals that have AC power supplies use the 2.5mm barrel jacks.  A semi-standard?

EHX uses 2.5mm for their 24V effects, AFAIK.

I use 2.1mm.
The only problem, is that if you have a plugpack with a 2.5mm plug on it, it will fit perfectly well into the 2.1mm socket - but it will not make a reliable contact internally.
The thing is, the 2.1 and the 2.5 have the same OUTER diameter...
Now if you use a 2.5, you will know where you are, because a 2.1 plug won't fit into it!!

So, if you are going to have all DIY pedals, and you want to stop one lot of power supplies being plugged into one lot of pedals, you have the option.
